So the new Jeff Beck live CD from last year with Vinnie on it. Just picked it up and it's incredible throughout. I am completely hooked. The drum sound ain't the greatest on it (it's a bit kinda goofy, and you can't hear some snare on louder parts with the ghost notes and double stroke stuff getting drowned out by excessive cymbal noise and a goofy bass drum sound and ringy toms), but .... the playing is outstanding, and so is all the music. Definitely enjoyable and if anyone here is a Vinnie fan (DOH!!!), they should definitely own this.
Vinster totally shines there. _________________ Jeremy Smirnoff

I've always wanted to chime in on things like this. :
1. Chuck Mangione 'Comes Alive' (1972) - with Steve Gadd and Tony Levin. Pre-Studio Gadd with really live sounding drums, bright snare and warm cymbal sounds. Out of print, but worth hunting down... Gadd before he was GADD.
2. Frank Zappa 'Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar' - Vinnie at his freakiest. VC can't rock like Bozzio, but can really play the outdoors -- artificial grouping/metric modulation madness. 'Tinseltown Rebellion' is great too.
3. Tony Williams - 'Foreign Intrigue' was my first exposure to TW... Loved his solo stuff starting with 'Spring'. Everything he does is jaw-dropping. Nobody plays singles like Tony.
4. The Flaming Lips 'Clouds Taste Metallic', 'Transmissions of the Satellite Heart' and 'The Soft Bulletin' -- Steven Drozd is a great rock drummer. He's like a demented Bonham.
5. Sonny Rollins 'Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2' - Even Art Blakey's mistakes sound cool.
6. John Coltrane 'Live at Birdland' -- Elvin at his most vicious. I like my jazz with an element of threat.
7. Sean Lennon 'Friendly Fire' -- I think Matt Chamberlain did this. Not drummy, but nice mellow drumming that's appreciated by anybody who ever had to play a similar material. John's kid can write a tune. _________________ |

The Outsideman. ralph humphrey and mike miller gig. mid 90's recording. fantastic stuff. started off as a class for students and they turned it into a recording. students were lab rats for some of these songs. i was for one of them but after the fact when the tunes were better constructed after the recording. love mike millers playing. ralph can read anything. _________________ |

Just heard some Buddy w Tommy Dorsey...Killer tunes man!!
Dennis' playing on P-Funk Live at the Beverly is pretty inspiring considering he is both the percussionist and the drummer on the gig..
Im on the hunt now for some Steve Ferrone with Chaka .Someone posted on FB a video of Chaka in the 80s .The band was Ferrone,Anthony Jackson,The Breckers,Hamish Stuart,Henry Gibson.Anyway it was so funky that I fell down and hit my head on the floor...
Does anyone know the names of the albums with this lineup?? |
