I've been getting into recording lately, and I was wondering what kind of equipment you guys use as far as computers, recording interfaces, mics, etc... _________________ |

I've had a Tascam 2488neo since the end of last year.
I like it because it's an all-in-one box that is fairly simple to figure out. I've used it mainly just to record myself and a couple of jam sessions with other musicians. It has a lot of features that I've yet to master.
For mics, I bought a Digital Reference drum mic pack from Guitar Center for about $160. I just use the two overheads, bass, and snare mics. I figure I will upgrade eventually, but these mics actually sound pretty good for my purposes. I also want to get a mixer so I can just input my mics through there and not have to re-adjust my EQ on the 2488 everytime I want to record a new track.
Of course most people will recommend the computer recording route. But since my computer is shared between my wife and I (and sits nowhere near my drums), the multitrack unit made more sense for me. _________________ |

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a related question:
Is there any free software for Macs that would allow me to record some live music with the built-in mic of my MacBook? I realize the quality won't be great, this is really just for a rough recording.
Any insights would be great!! _________________ "Music is my mistress, and she plays second fiddle to none." - Duke Ellington |

I use Digidesign´s Digi 002 which is a mid level recording interface. I bought an 100% analog external mic pre (Neve and Millenia) and also a kick ass analog to digital converter and I run everything in Pro Tools 7.4. The Digi 002 box is pretty much useless now that I have external pre´s and a converter (in essence, the 002 is an all in one solution which includes pre´s and line inputs + an integrated analog to digital converter) but i have to have it hooked up and turned on so that the Pro Tools software run.
My mics are Akg C4000 (around 600 bucks new), couple inexpensive Shure dynamics (57´s and 58´s) plus a small collection of modded mics by an american guy named Michael Jolly (who specialize in modding Oktava mics)....check him out at oktavamod.com (really really nice mics at affordable prices)
My computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo e8500 chip (affordable processor which handles the job very well although nowadays you can find even cheaper and faster processors like the AMD 965). Good quality ram (corsair dominator, 4GB) and a couple 500gb hard drives.
Monitors are Mackie´s HR824 _________________ |

I did a session last year and the vocals on the demo sounded great. I asked what they used and the girl sang directly into the onboard mic on their white Macbook. I was amazed.... _________________ Go Practice! |

I use a PC with Cubase 5,A UAD 2 quad, 3 uad1's, Rme Digiset, UA La 610 Signature Edition Pre. For mics I have 2 Neuman km84's, 2 Neuman tlm49's
2 Akg 214's, Senheiser 603,421's sure sm57, and SM7b, Studio Projects T3.
Suspiria, you should be able to record with garage band, or any other software for Mac. you just need to assign the internal mic as the input... _________________ www.myspace.com/chrisperra |

I'm actually just getting into recording. I've been mainly using my macbook for recording with a Lexicon Digital Interface. I'm mainly a guitar player so that works great. I'm trying to get ideas together for a full studio, so this threat is helping A LOT.
Regarding that microphone built into the macbook. Yes, it is SHOCKINGLY good, especially when dealing with vocals. I've actually made recordings with just that and they are actually pretty good. _________________ |

Audacity is a great "poor man's ProTools" solution for not only recording, but multi-track recording.

Enjoy!

cjbdrm nice setup!
My recording setup is based around a Mac Intel 8-core and DP 7.x Interfaces are dual Motu 828s, two API 4 ch. mic pre, Great River, Apogee Duet, Genelec 8040A monitors, Avatone monitors, PreSonus Sound Station, various headphones.
For mics, Sennheiser MD-421, EV RE-20, Sure Beta 98s, SM57, KSM32, Beta 57, Audio Technica 4051, AKG 414, D112, Audix D6, i5, Neuman U87.
My next "want" mic is a Shure KSM137 for the snare. Did a session session Erskoman, and got GREAT results with that mic on the snare.
And for guitar, we went direct into the API and used ALL plug-ins and got really fantastic results. Nobody could believe we didn't use one guitar amp.
Here's a pic in "mixing" mode.

Thanks Danny, your setup is real nice. I had 2 API 3124's and an Aurora 16 but I downgraded for financial reasons. I'm still paying for the studio build! LOL...
The AF12 is remarkably good at it's price point. I could not detect a difference in the DA between the two, for example. I'm using a new 1604 Mackie board now for pres but I'm happy with it, due to it's routing flexibility. Pres are surprisingly good. I'm able to get 3 independent latency-free headphone mixes, even wih FX patched in. I usually keep a laptop next to the kit and control the DAW remotely using PcAnywhere. Hey- I'd like to her some of your work sometime. PM me for contact exchange... _________________ |

Hi Danny, cool setup. I´m super curious to listen to these guitars recording you made. I have a real hard time making amp sims work. Anyway, what did you guys use in the chain ? _________________ |

Thanks! I'm trying to remember the chain, but it was something like compressor -> tube overdrive -> stereo chorus -> amp/cab modeler -> room and mics -> compression -> Parametric EQ -> leveler
I know, lots of stuff. But it sure sounded natural!!
