|
|
Hey guys. I have an older Yamaha 6.5x14 brass snare drum that has been a workhorse for me since the late 80s, early 90s. I noticed that it has cracks in the shell; three to be exact. They are perfectly straight. I notified drumnhands here on the board who works for Yamaha but was wondering if any of you experienced this. The drum is in near mint condition otherwise as it was very well cared for. I've never abused it or let anyone else abuse it. It's always been in a case when not being used.
Any help would be appreciated! _________________ www.robertferrell.com |

just curious, where are the cracks? near drilled holes?
I would think that to stop the cracks, you'd have to drill a small hole near the end of the crack maybe?
I've heard of aluminum welders, but not brass welders. I'm sure they exist though. _________________ DeSeipel |

I just heard back from one of the guys in Japan a couple, of days ago (was going to email you). The only thing they can think of that would mcause cracks like the ones on your drum is metal fatigue from being played. They were really surprised to see the cracks, but couldn't think of anything else that could cause them Shoot me an email and let me see if I can do anything. I knoe there is no warranty on a drum that old, but I might be able to help you get a deal on a new drum if you want. _________________ |

@ deseipel: The cracks are in random spots. One is actually near the drilled air vent and one is near the strainer mechanism. The third is by its lonesome not near anything.
@ drumnhands: That is crazy! I'm not a hard hitter. I was wondering if somehow my sweat dripped into a crack and weakened it or something like that! You're the man for the 411. I'm sending off an email to you ASAP! _________________ www.robertferrell.com |

Silly question, I know...
But, are you sure the crack is in the shell and not just in the light coating of lacquer? Is it all the way through the drum visible on the inside too?

Hey Mark! Not a silly question at all. Unfortunately the cracks are in the metal itself. I wish they were just cracks in the lacquer. All three cracks are visible from the outside and inside of the shell. I still can't believe it. I've been playing Yamaha drums since 1986 and never had a problem like this before. In fact, I've only had two problems in all this time and drumnhands here on the board has jumped in and offered his help immediately! Although I'm bummed I have to retire this drum (my second professional snare investment), I'm excited about purchasing a new 7" deep one! _________________ www.robertferrell.com |

If you're dead set on getting a new Yamaha snare, check out one of the new Yamaha sensitive wood shell snares before you get another brass or metal one.
If you're open to other brands, be sure to check out those George Way snares.
I recently picked up a Gretsch 6.5 x 14 wood snare with split lugs, and it is the perfect snare for me these days. |
