Alright, so I need some new music and I figured, I don't have that much stuff with most of my drum-heros on it. So what are the essential albums with Vinnie, Gadd, Weckl, Dennis, Buddy, etc, etc?

As far as the guys you mentioned, I would probably select:

THE VINNIE PREMIUM FILES

John Patitucci's self-titled debut

In fact, the first three Patitucci releases feature Weckl and Vinnie revealing their fusion chops, particularly Sketches, which has the track Scophiles. Vinnie plays so over the top on that one, I think it officially qualifies as drum pornography. My personal favorite track is Baio, Baio on the first release. Chick Corea on keyboards and Vinnie play a very passionate songo-style thang. As a leader, I think Patitucci is a much better writer and performer on the upright. He's a gifted upright player.

Karizma - Document

THE WECKL PREMIUM FILES

Michel Camilo - On Fire and Rendezvous have a lot of good Weckl stuff

Jeff Beal - Three Graces has Vinnie on it, but it's probably some of the tastiest, most subtle Weckl playing I've been privy to.

Mike Stern - Play. Again, I like it when Weckl is a guest and not a featured player or leader. With a talent like Stern to feed off of, Weckl is allowed to use his considerable talents to really make music rather than trying to blow from the first downbeat to the last.

THE GADD PREMIUM FILES

Chick Corea - The Leprechaun. The essential Gadd. He did some other fine work with CC, but this one is just freaky good, even if that mini-Moog is three times as irritating now as it was in 1975.

The Gadd Gang - Best recordings to capture his sound and the whole band has major junk in the trunk. Deep, deep pocket.

THE BUDDY PREMIUM FILES

You have to have West Side Story somewhere in your collection if you can honestly call yourself a drummer. He absolutely swing his butt off.

The Best of Buddy has Channel 1 Suite, and I don't really know what original recording that was on, but it's classic Buddy.

My favorite Buddy recording was Hawaiian War Chant with the Tommy Dorsey Band, but I only have a compilation disc.

DENNIS CHAMBERS

Definitely get all his stuff with Scofield on the Grammavision label. I think there were two studio releases -- Blue Matter & Loud Jazz -- and a live album (Pick Hits Live?). They're all over the top, excessively busy 80s jazz funk, but with the verve of a modern jazz icon like Scofield.

My favorite anything with Dennis Chambers on it is the Return of the Brecker Brothers DVD. Dennis is very good on that, but I'm probably more dazzled by Mike Stern. His solo on Song for Barry is my all-time favorite guitar solo. The band kills on this song at the end, so much better seeing the live version than buying the CD of the same name.

Tom Coster's From the Streets is some sweet DC too.

* I love both videos of Dennis', which is "In the Pocket" and "Serious Moves". Feature songs from Blue Matter and Loud Jazz. It seemed like they have played [together] for quite some time, the grooves and solos of each musician sounded so good and they feel so comfotable playing the tunes despite the intricacies. All the tunes also have some more "maturity" in them. To me, they sounded way much better than their previous efforts (studio or live recordings). :grin:
