http://books.google.com/books?id=0ZOAK9U9h4UC&lpg=PA9&ots=FooJI9e7jy&dq=gary%20chaffee%20technique%20patterns%20fulcrum&pg=PA9#v=onepage&q&f=false

the beginning finger control exercises in this book discuss fingers & fulcrum seperately, but he doesn't exactly define 'fulcrum'. When I think of using fingers, I think that the point at which the stick rotates is the fulcrum.

So what does Gary mean when he shows Group C; which mixes using the fulcrum and then the fingers? Does he mean use whatever normal playing motion/fulcrum and then use the finger indicated?

just wondered.

edit: upon further thought, I'm guessing he means use the index finger as the fulcrum, based on the numbering in the exercises.

Yes, it's the index finger he showed me. Then you use the others fingers separately to twiddle the stick. Make sure none of the twiddling fingers are touching each other---stick them out when doing the finger exercises.

Like you, I was lucky to study with Gary Chaffee. Do you agree that this guy covered seemingly everything you'll ever need to know on the drums? Well, thats my opinion at least.

As for the exercise itself, its a great one, and it clearly helps isolate your fingers to get them to work correctly, together.

would you guys say its similar to the section on JoJo's DVD?

This is fairly challenging to do in a german grip.

a lot of times I play in between german & french though = swiss grip I suppose.

Yes it is, definitely.

In spite of what I just said about Gary Chaffee, I think JoJo's DVD is the best for hand technique, bar none.
