Hey guys,
I'm taking my grade 8 for drums soon (its stupid but some of my universities require i have it ) but anyways, i have to compose a piece on drums and i am going to use finale to write it up because my hand notation is so messy.
my first question is
1. how do i do those slashes which mean like "to your own interpretation" because i'm notating the first bar, but then all the other ones are permutations of the first that will come randomly from what i feel like playing at the moment, so i can't notate everyone exactly. I tried using the smart shape tool to create lines, but the whole rest remains on the bar and i can't delete, this would make the notation incorrect.
2. How do i add coda and ds signs?
3. How do i add those signs that join between 2 bars (on the bar line) which have a big number on top and mean play the same thing for the number of bars that the big number states.
thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated! _________________ |

Tom - you're a riot!
1) The slashes are called Slash Notation (surprise!) and can be found in the Staff menu. Highlight the measure you want to convert to slash notation. Select the Staff tool, then go to the Staff menu and select apply Staff Style - Slash notation.
2) D.S. and Coda markings can be found within the repeat tool.
3) I think you're asking about 2 measure repeat signs. Those are in the Staff Tool too. Highlight the measures you want to apply the symbol to, go to the Staff Menu and select Apply Staff Style - 2 measure repeat.
Most anything you want to do can be found in the help menu in the Index. If you haven't done anything like this before, you might be able to do it quicker by hand with a ruler than you could learn to use a notation program to do it. Best of luck,

i should have mentioned that im using finale notepad...not the original finale 2006
why does it have to be sooooo expensive, i used to have the 2003 version, which i torrented
finale notepad doesnt have the staff tool...nor a staff menu!
I think this is going by hand, thanks Brad. _________________ |

For the slashes, IMO the best way is to put four quarternotes in the bar, go to the mass selction tool, highlight the measure, go to the massedit menu at the top and move over change, it should shoot out another menu to the left go to note heads, then a dialog will pop up where it say find, make sure all noteheads is selecte, then where it says change to, click on selected note heads. A window will open with a bunch of different symbols find a slash and double click on it. Now go to window click on special tools palette. A palette should show up on the right. Click on the one with the quartenote with an arrow coming off the top, then click on the bar. some squares should pop up over the lines coming out of the notes. click and drag each of them down so you can't see the line anymore. Now you will have slashes.
This works better cause you can go to layer to and put hits above the slashes.
I know it's a lot of work, but my jazz composition teacher told me this method and he's a finale expert. You know considering it's Mike Crotty and the Jazz font in finale was created by him and purchased by finlae from him. _________________ www.erikteichmann.com

Notepad's an editing tool and isn't capable of notating all the symbols you want. Even if it did, the learning curve can take awhle. Do it by hand, it'll be quicker. _________________ Go Practice! |

I think PrintMusic and definitely Allegro can do what you need without all the advanced capabilities (like notating Lute, Gregorian Chant, etc.) for substantially less money. _________________ Go Practice! |
