the technique his is using is the same technique that some guy is advertising all over drummerworld for the "1 handed roll" Its a
"trick" that comes from the DCI marching world. this clip, although not bad in ANY respects, was not that interesting to me.
my $.02.
but then again i have the flu and am probably just cranky! _________________ |

http://www.freehandtechnique.com/
http://www.onehandedroll.com/
same link i have discoverded
Jared Falk is the guy selling the 1 handed roll vid . . . again its a "trick" like backsticking, or faking which all came from the DCI drummer community. the "blazing speed" isnt a result of chops, but of controlling the rebound AND USING THE RIM OF THE DRUM to acheive a doube-bounce with essentially one stroke. there is a limit to the volume this technique can acheive which is a reason that rabb plays at the sort of constant mezzo-forte when applying this trick.
Rabb has been applying this technique for a while, but i have only noticed Falk's video recently.
in person i can show you the technique in about 30 seconds- to describe it without pics is much more difficult.
slowly stroke the drum normally and as soon as the beed hits the head, stop your motion . . . you should notice your stick an inch or so above the rim. slowly continue the hand motion DOWN (not up) so that your hand and thumb-forefinger fulcrum dip a couple inches below the rim ad allow the drumstick to come to rest on the rim itself. your stick should now be pointing upward at some 30 degrees or so (not an exact measurement)
here is the "magic' part . . . as you slowly raise your hand back above the rim, allow the beed of the stick to fall!!! if my instructions make sense and you are doing this correctly, this part of the motion will happen very easily . . . as your hand rises above the rim and the beed descends to the drum a second strike on the drumhead will occur when your hand and the beed come back into line with each other. continue your hand upward as if preparing another for another stroke.
2 hits 1 stroke . . .
as you get better at this you will not even here any rim clicks and you can acheive some burning speeds at about mezzoforte. tension in the fulcrum and the depth of your stroke all effect this technique and you will have to find that "feeling' on your own . . . its like riding a bike, once you get the feeling, you cant forget it, and you can drop it in pretty easily . . .sense its not about chops, you could play this 1 handed roll till the day you die or impress the ladies at your old-folks home!
enjoy your practicing! _________________ |

derek has a mean 1 hand 1 foot going on, but with both of these guys, i dont see them feeling it, it seems more like its a competition and they are taking it too seriously and thinking about what to play next that will be cool instead of just going with it, and most importantly, having fun!
i have to say though derek is one of the few i've seen who has really good control of his speed
Also, does it seem like they always have to hit every single piece of equipment on their kit lol! _________________

haha i bet bobby has hit himself in the face a fair few times when going to crash on those 2 crashes behind him....probably when he first put them and was still getting used to them.
If you guys havent checked gene hoglan...hes probably my favourite metal drummer, even though im not that into metal....and i hate the band he is in right now.
But Gene is a huge guy, and he makes everything look so effortless and easy. _________________ |
