The interview says both Vinnie and Tal are involved. Frustrating there's no personnel info anywhere though. Herbie's website is pretty bare bones too. If Herbie comes my direction I will definitely be there. _________________ Minister of Imaginary Hybrid Rudiments |

Saw Herbie in Connecticut in 2007. Would not have been there if Vinnie wasn't on the gig. Certainly wouldn't have spent $85 for the ticket. Case in point! |

I've been listening to The Imagine Project for the last two days now and for the most part, it's an extremely intriguing release. Like its recent predecessors, Hancock collaborates with some high profile vocalists - and undoubtedly there will be some purists who get turned off by that. But the results are strong in musical diversity and sophistication.
This being a forum for drumming, I'll try my best to stay on topic.
Tal Wilkenfeld and Colaiuta are the rhythm section on two of the songs: Don't Give Up (sung by John Legend and Pink) and A Change Is Gonna Come (sung by James Morrison). The latter song works especially well as a vehicle for some astounding interplay. After the song portion is complete, Hancock and the rhythm section take the second half of the nearly nine minute song for themselves and expand harmonically and stretch rhythmically.
As could be heard in the clip of The Song Goes On, Vinnie is allowed a lot of freedom to push the song and it is probably my favorite song on the disc. Another highlight is Vinnie's playing on Space Captain. He really greases up the bluesy feel of the track with touches of New Orleans funk and some of those trademarked off-kilter fills.
La Tierra (sung by Juanes) is anchored by Colaiuta and Marcus Miller, with a groove fairly reminiscent of the feel they provided for Sting's She Walks This Earth. At the three minute mark, they break into a smoothly executed samba which helps to take the track up a notch.
Evidently, Manu Katche' played the basic track on Tamitant Tilay / Exodus, but it sounds to me like he's been completely wiped out by excessive drum programming and that is a bit disappointing to me. Another odd disappointment was the decision to replace the remarkable voice of Seal with John Legend on Peter Gabriel's Don't Give Up. Legend does an admirable job but Seal usually brings a passion and grit that is fitting for a Gabriel song, so I was looking forward to hearing more of that. Seal does make a cameo in the intro to the cover of Lennon's Imagine but he and Pink's contributions are so brief. India Arie takes much of the vocals and the song slightly suffers from what sounds a bit like the 'benefit song effect', but the African traces provided by Konono No 1, Oumou Sangare and Lionel Loueke thankfully save the track.
There are a few tracks that I can't help but deem to be duds - the banal Tempo De Amor and the flatlined version of The Beatles classic Tomorrow Never Knows - but 8 out of 10 still makes for a great release these days, especially when the standout songs are as long as these are. |
