Miscellaneous
Our friend Wolfgang Schüler has transcribed some of the recordings on this site. They are available Here.
Video (Latest version of Windows Media and Quicktime required)
House Of Drumming's first short film about two drum geeks who get an unexpected visitor: Traditional Grip himself.
Here is a drum solo of Tony Williams taken from the "Live in New York" video. This is a beautiful piece where Tony places some nice melodies on his Toms.
Check out this video clip of Vinnie at the Baked Potato (5.1mb) This was the first show Vinnie did with Greg Mathieson and the clip shows the highlight of the first set with Vinnie soloing like only he can.
There is a microphone company called EVENT ELECTRONICS that has a cool video clip of Vinnie talking about their products in his studio. You may need the older "Voxware" audio codec to hear this clip.
Here is a video clip from a Japanese Television airing of a show at the Blue Note Tokyo with Chick Corea and John Patitucci. It shows some insane trading on Chick's tune "Humpty Dumpty". The show is available on CD but this video is not available anywhere for sale.
Here is an appearance on Jay Leno with another artist playing a tasty brush groove. Latest Quicktime required to view MP4 files.
The Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship video first exposed me to Vinnie years ago. I still think that nobody on the planet can play some of the stuff that Vinnie pulled off that night. Here is a video clip of my favorite 4 bars that Vinnie plays during the trade with Gadd and Weckl.(1.6mb) "Excuse me while I blaze 32nd notes with my hands then replace one of my hands with my foot."
The entire set of a show with Alan Pasqua (Piano) and John Patitucci (bass) recorded Here in LA is
available here. Some
beautiful finesse playing on this gig.
The entire set of another show with Dave
Garfield on Keys and John Pena on bass is available
here.
Vinnie was on the soundtrack to a cool movie called Time Code that had some tasty playing on it. Here is a track from it called "Comfort".
Here is the first of three clinics avialable here. This clinic really showcases the unique technique and soloing vocabulary that Vinnie has.
Here is the second clinic. Recorded in Germany (I'm told) and once you get over the lack in sound quality, there's some untouchable playing to be heard in this 45 minute clip. This one is probably my favorite of the three clinics available.
Here is the third clinic (15.2mb)> recorded from the board after the "Ten Summoners Tales" CD he did with Sting. The Q and A from that clinic is available right here.
Here
is a bootleg song from an unknown group recorded in 1986 at Ryles Jazz
Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Some sick playing on this one. The
melody's theme is off-beat 16th's. Imagine what Vinnie does on it. Another song from that show available
here.
Back in 1998 Karizma did a show at the House Of Blues in LA that was fantastic. Here is a MP3 of one of the tunes they did
called "Five Storks" (10mb). Check out the hi-hat work on the intro.
The tune is a half-time shuffle and I think this feel is especiialy
hard to solo over but Vinnie utilizes the straight 32nd note
subdivision to blow over which is pretty cool.
Eric Marienthal put out a CD around 1989-90 called Crossroads that has some great Vinnie tracks. This one being my favorite.
(7.8mb) It's a straight-ahead tune called "Upside-Down". Some pretty
creative orchestartions of figures on this tune. I particularly like
how Vinnie chooses the china cymbal while comping on the bass-solo;
something not many guys would think of but he pulls it off. Someone
want to tell me what the hell he's doing in the begining of his drum
solo please??
Karizma's live CD "Document" was recorded on a European tour. Here is a tune that didn't make the CD called "Toast For Elly" (14mb). This is unmixed but from the board. Vinnie's singles were on that night for sure.
