Re: Spud Alert: Rayford Griffin

I never get tired of watching this. Saw him with JLP over the summer...he is still a monster player, wow. Power all night, and they were playing deep JLP cuts, the hard tunes. He was kicking the shit out of that stuff, and of course took an extended solo that was crazy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Tom B with Etienne M'bappe, who is touring with McLaughlin, he plays with such taste, but then can go crazy with streams of notes.

Re: Assorted videos / YouTube thread

Saw Gary H play with John McLaughlin a couple days ago. His kb playing was on par with JM's guitar playing, he was as dynamic and as interesting. High level playing. One of the things I picked up on was the dynamics they all played with, there was one tune that was meditative and a slow burn. Very m...

Re: Soul Search: Led me to Funk

His playing on Court and Spark is so good. Every fill is right there and fits the music without being too visible. Those dead toms too, why do they sound so perfect for those tunes? A perfect sounding Yamaha kit would not be appropriate imo. Too in the way of Joni’s voice and the other instruments.

Some thick grooves that bounce and percolate. Tony Allen is the man. Love his grooves. Once I started into practici...

Re: The HOD ALBUM Thread

What started it all for me. I know exactly where I was when I heard this first... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCALsTTA1Rk Played this constantly from 1982-84. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJQeLuz3KxI The sound of his drums, the groove, the bass drum sticking it in there. The mix of the album is...
