Re: becomming a better drummer
Jeff,
I can relate my experiences in drumming with your video. Well done. This explains why many times I have seen drummers with "not a lot of chops" sound amazing with a band. And why some drummers with "great technique" will sound uninspired in a band context.

Re: Getting Yourself Out Of A Rut
One thing that has been very effective in getting myself out of a musical rut has been to take a few lessons with some monster players. It's true that we should "trust our ears" but sometimes it's helfpul to bring in another set of ears that are at the master level. I took some lessons fro...

Re: question about moulded ear protection and filters
janne, to determine the actual attenuation of a set of earplugs the audiologist would need to determine your sound field thresholds without the plugs and then again with the plugs. You simply subtract the unplugged thresholds from the plugged thresholds. This will give you the attenuation for each e...

Re: question about moulded ear protection and filters
The greater the attenuation (reduction) in sound level the better! My "not so loud" rimshots with Hot Rods were measured at 140 dB peak SPL. A 15 dB filter will only knock this down to 125 dB SPL. This is still hazardous to your hearing. As time marches on the cartilage in our ear canals w...

Re: Ear protection
Josiah, thanks for posting the NRR (noise reduction rating) for that plug. You're right it does sound dangerous! All non custom plugs are required to post the NRR. Drummers should be looking for NRRs of at least 25 dB. My rim shots with Hot Rods were clocked at 140 dB peak SPL. Flatter attenuation p...

Re: Novak playing The Chicken
So solid!!! Really nice beat placement and that figure at the end of the chorus is never rushed...great stuff!!!
Oh yeah, and I don't think anyone plays singles like Novak. Interesting to see how far back he's holding his sticks
