Re: Best and fastest way to learn how to read music(?)
I agree with Tombo 7/4 - the Perkins books are actually designed for the purpose and work better than many other "classic" texts. A teacher is recommended for a month or two until you get the hang of it. If you're self-taught it's possible there are some other issues a teacher may be able ...

Re: Investing in gear
You can get a pair of decent small diaphram condensors like the AT2021 or Cascade M139 for well under $200 that can work surprisingly well. They can work both as overheads for recording or a close mics for you HH or ride live.

Re: Investing in gear
If those Neuman's are out of your league $-wise Michael Joly does modifications of cheap mics to sound like the KM 184. http://www.oktavamodshop.com/index.php?cPath=2_30&osCsid=dkqbqtgbv64j7b52g7hs1cpmb5 There are lots of great cheaper options too. Go to Gearwire or some of the pro audio forums ...

Re: New book, and a couple of clinics...
Hi all, Todd and I worked for many months putting it all together and we hope you all like it and find it interesting and useful. It was a great opportunity and I'm grateful to Todd for choosing me to do the project. I've added quite a few new licks to my playing since doing it. ;-) Now you know why...

It sounds like a cruise ship type gig, only on land. I'd look more deeply into it. I'd really hate to find myself in Kuala Lampur without a ride home.

Very nice grooving, embellishments and fills, Steve. You could sell the rest of your gear and do just fine with just that. Just think of how much easier your load-ins would be!
