Polyrhythms, practice logging, timing practice and more...

Hey guys, It's a while since I've been on here. Back in 2011 I posted about a metronome app I'd developed with Lucas Ives called PolyNome. At the time it was quite basic. Since then it's turned into a fully fledged tool. Great for practice & live, logging practice, creating setlists, etc. etc. B...

Re: Evolution of a Drum Solo

John, of course I remember you. Congratulations :) Henry, in answer to your question... I don't know. The last few solos I did were more free flowing. The fact that I wasn't rushing and trying to fit lots in meant ideas were allowed to come out more easily. Since the vamp is a 2 bar loop it doesn't ...

Re: Joe Crabtree - Interview podcasts

Thanks :) The lessons on my site are always the things I'm most excited about, or working on at the time. I focus a lot on the simple things I find that seem to make a big difference. I think you'll enjoy them.

Re: Evolution of a Drum Solo

This is my only solo spot. I can essentially do what I want, but we go back into the song so I'm staying in time. I never really know what's going to happen. Sometimes, even if I intend to just "go for it" I end up coming out with the same old stuff. If you think about it, that's the most ...

Re: Joe Crabtree - Interview podcasts

Glad you're enjoying them. There are more on the way. I think Vinnie would be a tough one to get, but you never know.

Evolution of a Drum Solo

Hey everyone, I thought you might be interested in checking out what goes on in my head when I have to solo. I'm not a great soloist, there's not been much call for it on the gigs I've done. Most of my YouTube videos are about techniques or breaking down other people's stuff, so I was a little appre...

Re: Joe Crabtree - Interview podcasts

Thanks for posting that :) There are a lot more since then including one with Dave Weckl which was fascinating for me. If anyone reads this and enjoys the podcasts please leave me a nice review on iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/drum-talk/id577171074?mt=2 Thanks, Joe http://www.joecrabt...

Re: Ot: The best in ear there is?

I used to use ACS customs. I had problems with the seal breaking when I smiled. I interviewed Dave Weckl for my podcast ( http://www.joecrabtree.com/podcast ) and he told me he uses Shure 535s ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003NSBKT6/?tag=drumsolo-20 - I couldn't find that info anywhere on the web). I ...

Re: Poll: Timekeeping... external or internal?

I think there are two issues here - what is accurate time and what sounds like it's in time. If you're playing to a sequencer then they pretty much have to be the same. If you rush a backbeat somewhere but the next kick is perfectly placed the kick will sound late. If you weren't tied to the click t...

Re: Poll: Timekeeping... external or internal?

I was thinking about this while I was on tour. I always figured that training some kind of internal time would be the key to better groove, but in an experiment where I tried to keep time with no physical movement whatsoever I did terribly. Check out the this video that I posted at the beginning of ...
