MSG's NJ-NY-NYC gigs

For the 8 years I spent on the road, I had some serious "run ins" with some guys playing in "tribute bands." And that left a real bad taste in my mouth. So many of them went OVERBOARD in the "look-alike" department. And many of them seemed to put themselves on a pedesta...

Re: "non-drummers" to the public who can actually play well

No "Go and Practice," that drummer (that Sammy replaces) is the great Michael Silva. He was a wonderful drummer, and a favorite of ALL tap dancers. He and Jimmy Slyde even toured as Taps and Traps. Bob Moses used Jimmy on one of his recordings, Jimmy was like the Jack DeJohnette of tap. Mu...

Re: Jo Jones!

I've never seen that before and I have A LOT of Papa Jo footage. It's interesting to compare that performance with this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3QFNNk3tgI Papa Jo definitely had his bag of "licks" (vocabulary.) And I agree with you Steve that is the "joy of creating music&...

Re: The Buddy Rich television show

Hey Pocket, These are the ones that came to my mind immediately. Not really "rock," not really "swing" but super funky. Buddy really had a nice loose straight eighth feel, like some of the older rock drummers like Bonham, Ian Paice, etc. Pure Buddy "swunk." I wore this ...

Re: The Buddy Rich television show

Yes Buddy's GROOVE often gets ignored due to the other "more outrageous" aspects of his performances. However, I have often said (and talked to many guys about this, Freddie said I really nailed it, an actual compliment from Freddie, WOW!) That when Buddy was surrounded by his peers (not t...

Re: SIMON PHILLIPS - The thread about Simon

I was with The "Toxic Monkey" band in NYC in their one week of existence (in that phase,) and can tell you that Like was digging the hell out of Keith. Toxic Monkey was a Bill Evans band that featured Luke, Keith, Will Lee, Weingart, and Bill. Yet was sort of like a Los Lobotomy's East Coa...

Re: Brice Wassy

I've been listening to Brice Wassy since Salif Keita's "Ko Yan" and "Soro," that's some of my favorite music ever! Those led me to his own "Shrine Dance" and "Balengu Village." I don't like "NGA Funk" as much. There is a Graham Haynes CD called "...

Re: Do big name guys get honest constructive feedback?

Interesting topic Steve. I think many established people in any field don't get enough quality feedback. But from my experience, if they are interested in career longevity, they appreciate criticism IF they get it from someone who they respect. Hell, I don't think most people (in general) get enough...

Re: VINNIE - Vintage videos...OK or not vintage.

Now THAT was a well thought out answer! Not sure what was more a blessing, the answer or the effort. Refreshing! Thanks. This is something I have wondered for a long time now relating to "covers" or popular songs most of us know or can nail quickly. The reading skills related to more comp...

Re: VINNIE - Vintage videos...OK or not vintage.

Stupid question...Why does he need to read on this song? I would assume it is all feel at this point...he's heard the song a million times already...nothing complicated about the structure. The answer... Proper people skills, and professionalism. Think about it, a person takes the time to create (p...
