Re: Latin drumming teacher in LA?

If your looking to get your Brazilian chops together hit up Michael Shapiro. I think he is still at LAMA. Pick up the album "Another Season" by Kevin Lettau. Some great Brazilian feel from Michael. Lots of great phrasings and accents to pick up on. I studied with Mike (he's no longer at L...

Re: Latin drumming teacher in LA?

Phil's got a point there... Personally, I don't really like the term "Latin Drumming" because it means so many different things depending on the region and the culture... are you wanting to learn Afro-Cuban stuff, or Brazilian, etc, etc... I'd suggest in addition to learn all the individua...

Re: Latin drumming teacher in LA?

Look up Aaron Serfaty. He was a session guy in Venezuela back in the day and he was one of my teachers at LAMA. He's also teaching at USC.

Re: SIMON PHILLIPS AUDIO INTERVIEW / INSIDE MISICAST

That's a great little video, mate! Simon is a class act, he's really got his shit together- and his drums always sound amazing. I remember seeing him at the Baked Potato with Jeff Richman when I first moved to LA. He was playing those Bubinga drums, 3 racks, 3 floors, and 1 kick... during the break ...

Re: Indy 500 Pit Stop Method for Changing Drum Heads?

Like Matus said, the concept relies on the theory that everything is equal, which is never true. Why is it so hard for drummers to just learn to tune a drum? It's really not that hard, and after a time, it becomes very fast. Agreed! I like the "quality time" I get with my drums when I'm i...

Re: New stuff from Jojo / Nerve is up now

Killer stuff... This must groove so hard live. Jojo just slays me with that shuffle and hitting all those figures on the kick during the first track.

Re: New Years Eve gigs anyone?

Well... my gig was, well interesting, but fun! We had some issues with the monitors and the PA, the band was using a snake that they apparently hadn't tested so we were missing a few things. We were also on the roof, so concrete floors, a brick wall to my right... the sound wasn't the greatest, but ...

Re: Search for Portnoy's replacement continues...

Could be coincidence of course, either guy would be an interesting choice. Though I couldn't see either of those guys making any long term commitment. Yeah, I'm fairly certain that the new cat will have some sort of contract with the band... he'll be a hired gun, but will be "in the band."...
