Re: Ndugu Ride

I switched to an all 2002 setup and love it, they fit in with guitars in a really pleasing way. The cymbals have held up very well under a lot of pretty hard hits. You can't base fragility on the old 404 line. :o) Well, those RUDES were fragile POSes...and they sounded like cast iron. FWIW, it seems...

Love the BD sound too.

It's growing on me, but needs less gloss and more dirt to me...

Re: David Lee ROth w/ VH again?

saw them in Indy 13th row a few years ago...unbelievable show...

Until the strains of 1984 arrived...then all energy just collapsed in the building.

But until then, those guys were on FIRE.

Re: Real cool Vinnie story from another forum...

He always plays to the song, and even though he has these incredible chops, he knows when NOT to use them as much as he knows when to use them... which to me is the most important part of any musician.

Wow, go figure.

Re: Musical individuality: some questions to ponder....

It takes confidence, guts and courage to say for oneself "I am me." and do what it takes to become that. It's a "letting go" that allows one to become an individual, for good or bad. Technique is there to remove barriers to expreission, but some great drummers don't have perfect ...

Re: Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, Joey DeFracesco DVD @ DIME

Cerebral in the sense that he uses form, creativity, individuality and the things associated with intellectualism. Afro-cuban drumming is not nearly the same as the Rite of Spring. Those rhythms, while complex and unique and wonderful, have a repeating nature, as do the "rhythms of Africa"...

Sorry, but seeing this just killed me...I love the feeling I get from watching him play...

Riley's book Beyond Bop has some Elvin transcriptions...he thought of shit NO ONE else did.

Re: Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, Joey DeFracesco DVD @ DIME

You know, my dream gig would be...not playing drums with whomever, but playing organ or piano with Elvin for a day straight...or guitar, it wouldn't matter. I wish Jeff Beck was able to play with him...I could see that being phenomenal. One in my top five is the Sonny Sharrock with Elvin, such insan...

Re: Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, Joey DeFracesco DVD @ DIME

I am thinking that Elvin is more influential on modern rock drumming than Tony. He's more out than Tony, but with more power...holy shit does he have power. Check this out. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=386302 People who say he's all African and how he is just the voice of a thou...
