Re: Grp Super Live In Japan 87

This tape was the first thing I heard of the non-Zappa Vinnie, I think... His playing totally threw me, the long melodic cymbal/tom patterns with the little clusters of notes played over the bar line, but in time, which are also like stuff he did on Tinseltown Rebellion (elsewhere, I'm sure, that wa...

Re: Fred minus drums

I like that Tony always, 99% of the time perhaps, makes me ask "Why?" and it is not a question I'm asking myself about the chopsy stuff. Take the intro to Fred. The single hi hat mote at the end of it, why did he do that? Different timbre, it's like a tag, but it also connotes a feeling, a...

Re: Van Halen Sign to Interscope Records

AVH highlights for me: Mean Street: hi hat and bass drum work, tricky syncopation, mega endurance Loss of Control: just badass all the way through Sunday Afternoon in the Park: a weird slinky groove that plays against the guitar interestingly Somebody Get Me a Doctor: the little pickup fills are cla...

Re: Van Halen Sign to Interscope Records

We had a groove in one of our cadences that mimicked Little Guitars closely. Needless to say, we were mostly huge AVH nuts so we hit it extra hard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_-ytH0JMZg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b7mRIdAD48 All these bands jumping around acting all hard and tough, they hav...

A totally mind boggling Mahavishnu recording.

Billy is ON FIRE. Really, the whole band is nuclear. One of their last performances, apparently.

Re: Ralph Peterson

He sounds a little like Keith Moon, has the same sort of creative melodic attack, freewheeling power and energy as the younger Keith Moon. That might be lowering him to a non-jazz level, but I hear similarities.

I've been thinking about his playing a lot recently...he is a master.
