Re: Gregg Bissonette

I wonder sometimes why people feel compelled to say negative stuff about someone like Greg with Greg's stature. I mean, I guess I tend to like more "stylized" drummers - drummer's that have their own voice on their instrument ....and not studio drummers that are more chameleons....but god,...

Re: Official Virgil Donati thread

I guess I feel like a lot of people here, I just don't hear the "big deal" with DW drums. I mean, they are a good company that cares about their product....I just haven't heard a DW kit where I was like "woah!! great sound!". I don't have a problem with the snare drums I've heard...

Re: Mr. Gadd

I got into Gadd late in my drumming life, to my peril.... but I'm so glad he is there now. I started off like maybe many of us did, with the rock stuff, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, John Bonham etc etc. I got into jazz and fusion when I heard Billy Cobham and then Weckl...continued from there. List...

Re: Electric and Acoustic for's and against's

I have my Roland strickly for practicing at home. I would never attempt to use it live, even though I have the TD30. IMO, the music I play live doesnt warrant it and yes, it can be challenging to dial it in properly when playing with the band. It can be done, but I just dont feel like its the proper...

Re: Mike J documentary video

I honestly don't know why he gets so much shit here. Like most drummers I learn or observe from, I take what I want and leave what I don't want <shrugs>. What's the big deal? It just always comes off as sour grapes when people just rip on what seems like a nice guy. I liked a lot of his linear patte...

Re: Keith Moon and black dots

What I got out of what Tony and Elvin said about Moon is expression. I think musicians at that level felt that originality and expression on their instrument was everything. Like his technique or not, Moon had his own thing...it was his playing personality and his alone. I think copy-cats were looke...

Re: Developing Consistent/Solid Time

To me an important aspect of playing good consistent time is how your limbs move. Weckl has a section on this from his "How to Develop Technique" vid. In a nutshell it's saying if you consistently move your arms wrists legs in time with subdivisions of the beat, you will be in time. A simp...

Re: what do drummers need to know about pedals?

I am afraid it's getting off-topic but I actually believe it's better to understand the phyisicality of leg ankle and foot because they are the ones that drive the pedal, not the other way around. Short of a pedal that is totally mechanically jacked up for whatever reason, I play more or less the sa...

Re: Heroes/Idols and Hypersensitivity

I like how you say it "hypersensitivty" just because people might be passionate about their heros. My heros were a big deal when I was learning how to play. Music is very personal and deep to me. I hold music and my influences in high regard. Do I worship them? Absolutely not. They are hum...

Re: Do big name guys get honest constructive feedback?

It probably differs from drummer to drummer. It varies as much as personalities vary. Some guys can take constructive criticism, some guys can't. Some guys "go inside" and are self aware of their shortcomings and change them, some guys look for and seek advice. I would argue the guys that ...
