Honestly...it feels weird to me watching jazz exercise videos like this one (even if the exercises are great)...it doesn't swing...a consistent pulse and a great feel should always be the unconscious lesson, no matter how complicated the exercises are. I agree... I'm sure in the long run, something...

I never got the chance to experiment with different heads on them, but I would also try going with a plain clear ambassador on the bass drum. I'd suggest a coated ambassador on the kick... I use one on my Starclassic Birch 22x18 and I've never been happier with my kick sound... tuned wiiiide open w...

...I should also mention that since I am playing rock, R&B, and basically dance stuff...I usually play with the butt-end in my left hand and rimshot the back beat. Gives added strength and ballsy pop that is really noticeable if someone else sits-in for a few tunes and plays without the rimshot...

You know, I've always wondered why Virgil doesn't play two kicks... I mean, sure, he's allowed to prefer the feel of the double pedal, but still, you'd think that with his technique he'd really be able to utilize the two kick drums more than others. Maybe when he lands the Dream Theater gig? haha
