Re: Wood Hoops
Frank, I use them on some snares. I really priced around, and started using the drummaker ones. Their wood rims' profile seem a little lower, but the Yamaha ones were just too expen$ive for me. As were many of the other companies' wood rims. I am going to experiment with putting them on a whole set ...

Re: Help! Bearing Edges on Maple Custom Absolutes
You are very welcome Joe!!!!! While I will not aim the edge complaints that I have had in the past to any specific company, I will just say that Joe's experience is very common. You would be amazed how many GREAT (mass produced) drum sets have HORRIBLE edges. MANY pros even have to have "their&...

Gordy Knudsen's GK "Ultraphones." THE BEST isophones, EVER!!! And if anything ever goes wrong with them, he'll stand behind them and fix them for you. But under almost 10 years of CONSTANT use, mine have NEVER (!!!!!!) had issues. They are light, super comfortable, and the extra deep (exte...

Agreed Pat! That CD is, off the hook, RI-DIC-U-LOUS !!!!! ESSENTIAL listening. I laugh more when I listen to that than I ever do during "Fletch," "Spinal Tap," or "Anchorman." (And I love those movies.) Greg should make another run of these, and EVERYONE should BUY it!!...

Dan Weiss, he's a m-f'er!!!! Check out Rez Abbasi's "Things To Come," and Dave Binney's "Aliso!" Dan subbed for Smith in Summit and from what I heard, he killed it! By the way there is a new Summit record called "Spirit and Spice," and check out "Raga Bop," fo...

Re: Carlock's bass drum sound
I just saw Keith last month (w/ Lukather, Will, Bill Evans, and Weingart) and sat 3 feet from Keith's bass drum. (Off topic, they did mostly old Los Lobotomy's tunes!) Bass drum was a 20" Maple Custom (it sounded like a 20 x 14, but I don't think they even still make that size,) batter head PS3...

Since you say you live on the East Coast, I figured that I would suggest a great edging source. Precision Drums in NY State (about 1.5 hours north of NYC) has always done all my edges and drum work. They are the best on the East Coast (as far as I am concerned.) They will do EXACTLY what you want do...

Re: Building Vocabulary- time frame?
I was talking with Steve Smith a while ago about this. I had been working on a specific Chaffee "thing," and while I could play it, I was having a hard time "applying" it, live with a band, I was bummed. I asked him how long it took him to apply some of the stuff he had worked on...

Re: Yogi Horton
There is a SMOKIN DVD of Yogi playing live with Bob James called "Live From The Queen Mary," and his groove, and a brief solo is off the hook!!! He is on a bunch of the Ashford and Simpson (and Luther Vandross I think?) stuff too. Marcus Miller LOVED his playing. Yogi always sort of remind...

Re: Best Bags & Cases
All the guys that I know that do "light" touring (vans, planes occasionally, one tech tours, and busses) do this. You have good bags for all of your drums, that serves local gigs. Then you have the hard "plastic cannister" cases (Protechtor or something of the sort) for potential...
