Re: Dream Theater
I've certainly admitted myself to be a both a fan of the band and a fan of Portnoy- simply in terms of influence at a young age and where my research going backwards would take me.... ...however, I find that there's really no way that the band, the label, and even Portnoy aren't involved all in this...

Re: Looking For a Mentor
Drum books will only keep you playing in circles. I really hope this statement and the rest of your post was tongue and cheek. If you were a priest would you ditch the bible? If you were in med school would you just ditch your school and the curriculum being taught there? Perhaps those examples are...

Re: Looking For a Mentor
My advise- from being in a similar experiences (sans the finger thing) would be to a) stop looking for the "fusion crowd". Yes... it's LA. There's lots of fusion going on, but at a very pro level with some very pro players (not at all trying to suggest that you aren't or won't ever be that...

Re: That one album...
The more you play with advanced jazzers, the less likely they're going to be influenced by albums where the drummer is the bandleader. My experience suggests this is the overwhelming reality. The lone exception seems to be Blakey, whose groups maintain their authority among purists. This... it's st...
