Re: DAVE WECKL - Recent activity & Videos

I've heard that before about Camilo. I totally love the man, one of my favorite players of the Afro-Cuban Jazz genre. I think he is a genius. Very unique voice, true virtuoso and great composer and story teller. To each his own :-]

Re: Developing Consistent/Solid Time

Something happens in the brain. If I listen to drummers or my recorded self, I can single out time fluctuations pretty easy. But 'on the fly' I don't always hear these changes in time. So the goal is to 'hear' as you play in the same way as you just sit down and listen. We have to deal with 'how' ou...

Re: Best drum head brand for retaining tone

I don't know how they do it, but I think Remo heads are both the best sounding and the most durable drumheads. My Gretsch set came with Evans heads, when I changed them for Remo's the whole kit opened up. It's a mystery to me.

Re: VINNIE - Vintage videos...OK or not vintage.

I found Some better audio with no video on youtube from that show and the band sounds more together. The crowd cheers on Vinnies fast and furious runs like they're watching some sports game. Oz gives a cart blanche and gets run over by a freight train. Stellar playing, out of this world intelligent ...

Re: VINNIE - Vintage videos...OK or not vintage.

Watched it on the iPad, audio is dreadfull. I fully understand why he hates these vids. Besides that, I like Weckl better with Oz Noy. Weckl and Noy are a perfect match imho.

Re: Drummers who are far better musicians than players

I think the statement is over the top, but I do agree there are some great drummers with remarkable weak technique. I just saw one sunday. Some Russian Jazz drummer with good pocket, great sound, solid time and original ideas etc...but plain weird way of doing things. This is nothing new, is it? Abo...

Re: What separates the truly great from the merely skilled?

The original question was: what is the difference between truly great drummers and the 'very good'?. So, music-wise. Not ;who makes the most bucks [Ringo Starr, Lars Ulrich, Charlie Watts, Larry Mullen] or who is the busiest [Vinnie, Keltner etc] or the most famous [Phil Collins, Don Henley, Dave Gr...

Re: What separates the truly great from the merely skilled?

I don't think 'luck' is a big factor in being truly great. But there are definitely truly great players who do not stand in the spotlight 24/7. So I think a truly great player can have BAD LUCK, and not live out the full [musical] potential. But I do not believe for a second that Dennis Chambers, Ch...

Re: What separates the truly great from the merely skilled?

Miles said that in the end everything comes down to the ability to 'envision' or 'imagine' sound/notes without being dependent of your instrument. Good players are good because they practice, genius players are so because they hear everything [right]. Beethoven was stone-deaf when he wrote some of h...

Re: What separates the truly great from the merely skilled?

More and more I find genuine talent to be the big Divider between good and Truly Great. Don't get fooled, you can not compensate for the gift that people like Buddy or Tal Wilkenfeld etc are born with. If you would take every step that Dave Weckl took, and practice as much as he did , and play with ...
