Re: Your personal heroes?
I guess he's a vibraphonist now, but Jason Marsalis' Music in Motion is a sweet album I often return to. There's nothing revolutionary about his playing. I just find him really tasty.

Ha! You could say that about a lot of drummers, Rodge. It's artful sloppiness, I guess.

Re: Your personal heroes?
Ralph Humphrey is a MAJOR heavy, but most of his best stuff is confused for Gadd. Ha! Humphrey's a studio legend, one of the all-time greats. Rick Marotta is a guy that has always done it for me. He's sneaky and clever. I think I just like the way he thinks. He gets accused of stealing from Gadd, bu...

Re: Dave DiCenso Interview is up!!
Finally set down and read it. Steve, this is so much better than MD interviews or any of the other mags. It drives me crazy when they let a guy go on and on about non-essential things and gloss over something that leaves the reader screaming for more or for clarification. It's maddening. This was a ...

Re: Tempo Issues-- Help!
I struggle with time if the lead instrument has time problems. I try to lock in with the keyboard or rhythm guitar while laying something solid for the bassist. When they get elastic, I tend to get elastic too. This is great when the group has time to themselves to work it out and make it sound orga...

Re: John Scofield Uberband: Live At Berklee
This is some of my favorite Scofield stuff. The originals were so full of Deitch's awesomeness. Cato sounds like he gets the material here. Not sure I get what Scofield's always doing, but it's groovy as hell.

Re: Will I hurt myself this way ?
I've come around recently to an argument that doing it the old-fashioned way -- all wrists on pilllows, etc. -- is probably the QUICKEST way to getting good hands, but I remain unconvinced that it's the BEST. It's probably unhealthy. That's how I did it, and spent the next 25 years trying to learn h...

Re: Steven Wilson live in Mexico (Marco Minemman on drums)
This is going to sound weird, but I don't really like Marco's drumming when he's playing any kind of groove. When he's not playing a groove I kinda dig what he does. Odd. I get that. His sound kind of thins out when he's just laying it down. Never thought about it until you mentioned it. Maybe that...
