Re: Best and fastest way to learn how to read music(?)
Ted Reed’s Syncopations has good studies for application to jazz, but the BIG problem is the quarter notes below all measures of all exercises. I practiced a lot with this book partly because a study was actually part of the entrance audition at DC. By reading it as is, you unconsciously reference e...

Re: Vinnie to play on Joe Satriani's new album...
Thanks! Hugerack looks cool and gearpage is well organized. Most guitar forums are gear/tone heavy. Gear threads can have millions of posts. I’ve never been a drum gear whore neither will I be for guitar. Get a good instrument and a good amp, the rest is in your fingers. I’m more interested in the a...

Hey Odd-Arne!
I know you played guitar before drums.
I was wondering if you know about a guitar forum on the net with pros chiming in and with a good degree of maturity/support and well managed?
I mean a HOD of guitar...

Re: Best and fastest way to learn how to read music(?)
With a teacher I would start with a basic reading text like Phil Perkins "Logical approach to rythmic notation" and a metronome. This book has all the note values, ties, syncopations. There are not many rhymitic figures used in popular music. With one teacher I worked on a sheet which had ...

Thanks for the heads up!
I've been playing guitar for a year and I'm totally into Satraini right now.
He's a great composer. Now add Vinnie and OMG...can't wait!
What's with those Italians? Spaghetti, espresso,...?!?

Re: Best albums to play with?
Playing along to whole records goes back to my teen early 80s vinyl era. I totally wore out Maiden's Piece of Mind and Powerslave, Sabbath's Mob Rules, Dio's Holy Diver, Back in Black and the A sides of Led Zep IV and Rush Signals. I could play through the skips and scratches. Those were basically m...

Hilarious!
Those lol sketches are produced here in Quebec for local TV. They make them mostly speechless because in French they would be less exportable.
Here's Spinal Tap on jazz. Those guys didn't grow up...

Re: Will I hurt myself this way ?
A thing taught to me by Kim Plainfield when I was studying at DC was Buddy Rich's "Big Bird" approach. If you look at old Buddy Rich videos you can see him doing it when he reaches blazzing speed on the snare, his arms are like bird wings taking flight. It's not a flash thing, there's phys...

Re: From drums to guitar
We gotta a lil' surprise for ya tonite, we gonna turn the microphone ova to Ace Frehley... Shock me was my little spotlight. However I should not be Ace in that band. For better or worse I'm the least bad singer, so I sing most of the tunes. And I'm not the best soloist so we spilt the solos 50/50....
