If you look at YT videos of other bands in the same market, the drummer seems to be far more active than one might expect in a typical functions context.

Lee is another Baltimore Very, Very Bad Person. He is very versatile, supremely musical, and can play.... He's been out recently with Kenny Barron, Bucky Pizzarelli, and is in Italy now with Lonnie Liston Smith. He is also a a very gracious person with rather a sense of humor.

Ron Kearns posted something the other day on FB that may be relevant: "practice is what you do when you want to get better."

This helps me focus when I get frustrated or sidetracked into what I'm already good at.

Along with all of the above, start transcribing. I'd pick a tune you might play on a gig, something simple. First lay out the form, then pencil in the main groove(s), and key events.
