the only way to minimize that is with positioning the snare mic so that the hi-hat is as off-axis as possible (directly behind the snare mic). If your hi-hats are set fairly high relative to the snare, it will be much easier, but if you set your hi-hats lower, no so much. Thanks for reply guys! The...

...you do a thorough warmup before playing.

...you don't play rudiments/fills/fool around the drumkit during a rehearsal when your bandmates have something to say.

I've always been using earplugs, which has been the subject of sneer and jokes of my bandmates. However I've never had any problems with my hearing.
