Carlos Vega recommendations

Postby chrisdrums » Tue Feb 21, 2012 4:56 pm

I'd love to check out more of Carlos Vega's playing, that guy had a groove a mile deep. What are his "must have" records?

Chris.

There's a live cd of James Taylor that is crazy good. His version of "country road" is amazing. I don't know which live cd it is exactly though.

Hourglass is another one to mention... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=8323802

Mark is a huge fan... I´m sure he´ll chime in with some less known must have Carlos albums! 8-)

Yeah JT "Hourglass" is a master piece, that's my #1 album for Carlos, I like Al Jarreau "This Time" too.
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

James Taylors Hourglass, or live cd, any of the Burning Water cds, Linda Ronstadts Cry Like a Rainstorm/Howl Like the Wind is awesome. Any of the 90s Vince Gill stuff High Lonesome Sound, I Still Believe in You. The Karizma stuff is great

Pick up "For My Friends" by Greg Mathieson. Carlos sounds real nice on this one. Saw Carlos play at the Spud many times. Also caught him with Burning Water. Man do I miss Jeff and Carlos!!

Carlos!

Yeay! Someone else who's into the most (in my mind) criminally under-rated drummer EVER.

All the suggestions above are fantastic. My favourite is the James Taylor double album 'Live'. It showcases what a team player Carlos was. Everything in there is so musical, he makes some beautiful choices and does it all with groove. Aside from the GROLO (my word for Groove/Solo) in the track 'Country Road', check out the way Carlos builds the song from nothing to a massive climax and beyond. The dynamics, choice of instruments, and the constant sense of forward motion (despite laying the beat right back) is simply astounding.

Check out anything he did with George Benson, on the GRP Live In Session DVD (some outstanding stuff there) and a CD by Matt Rollings called Balconies. That is a great disc from start to finish...

Enjoy the discovery!
