I'm guessing only a small portion of Roger Waters' vox this tour were live.

The video was obviously shot on a soundstage somewhere.

I'm pretty sure the drums were live.

There is a boot of a show in Rio with all the tracks included...click, vox, everything.

But is it that important...

If you have that much riding on an old geezer's voice holding up for three hours a night for many concerts a year, you'll use some risk management.

Doesn't detract from the huge shows, IMO.

Umm it kind of does if your paying a premium price for tickets, trying to achieve that live experience that you can never get from an album.

I have no problem with having extra stuff happening. It only bugs me when people pretend they're doing something when they're not.

Same feeling here. It is so common now, and some of the things you can do can add som extra spice to the show.

I occasionally play in a U2 covers/tribute band, and recently they have been digging into all the backing tracks they are using and trying to get it roughly close, and there are a lot of stuff happening right there. Way more than I actually thought of.
But as long as they are performing with it and not pretending to do something they are not, it is fine by me.

How would you know, really, whether or not it was Roger singing Run Like Hell?

You simply can't. It doesn't matter when the entirety of the show is amazing whether or not there is a backing track. That's the only way to do these shows. Everyone on stage is on a click.

It's not a jazz trio in a small club. It's theatre.

The live experience should be as good as possible.

I read somewhere on the internet, from a reputable anonymous source, that 95% of drummers play 5% of their material live, with the rest being samples....

That´s BS. Maybe in the world of shitty pop stars, but there´s plenty of musicians playing real music around the globe.
