Interesting idea. I must admit that I have no idea who that keyboardist is but what they're are doing seems like comissioning, ordering a piece of work by those who want to see it happen.

Re: Big Weckl announcement?
I don't find it greedy at all - however, I don't find it interesting either.
Jay Oliver ('s playing) was never my cup of tea and his sounds are still horrible.
Weckl's sound has evolved from his earliest work, where it was boxy, gated and un-natural to one of the most
beautiful natural kit-sounds. Jay Oliver apparently still utilizes all his corny sounds from way back + he has 2-3 songs he keeps writing.
From a PR standpoint I think they went a little overboard. This is not HUGE. This is what many modern
musicians do all the time at this point. Crowdfunding is here to stay, I think. At least for an extended period of time.
Anywho, Weckl's playing sounded fresh as always. Not sure how much they've recorded already?

I feel like I am going to get marched into the center of town and put in the stocks for saying this, but I have got to rant.
This is the just the exact opposite that the type of announcement that I wanted to hear. That is the kind of music that instantly plays in my head every time I think of Weckl-- I've already heard "this" project before!!! I was hoping for a curve ball on this one and a stretch.
I love Weckl, and as far as drummers go, I actually prefer listening to his playing over Vinnie's (any many other's). That being said, I can hardly stand the music that I have to listen to in order hear his playing-- it's like eating a rotten doughnut to get to the cream-filled center. I was just hoping he was stepping outside of the comfort zone, dammit.
Musicians this good should be writing better music than play-a-longs, which is what all of this music sounds like to me.
Sorry, but I think this rant has been building up since sometime around the release of "The Next Step" video...
Re: Big Weckl announcement?
Yeah I'm with you guys, they did that music already...
I was so looking to hear Dave going on tour with a big Pop/Rock name, anyway, he does what he loves, I respect that.
But as I have to produce my own music, I can't help other people, and I don't feel like asking to "fans" to help me for doing it.

I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Amen. The idea that people are HAPPY at the thought of hearing stuff that sounds like Hardwired and Masterplan (both of which I own but neither of which I can stand to listen to) had my jaw on the floor.
All that said, I like the idea of the project and certainly don't think it's greedy or anything. But musical-taste wise I'd pay more for something without the fusion straight jacket applied with the Oliver effect.

I'll buy the DVD of the "behind the scenes" stuff, but I'll wait for the record is finished before I decide to pick it up. I want to know who is playing on it, and hear some samples first. Plus, like I've said before, a CD shouldn't cost more than $9.99. Digital downloads should be even less.
Re: Big Weckl announcement?
Yea, I had my fill of that souped up porno music 20 odd years ago.
I find the current drum sounds a little airy fairy. And if they swapped out Oliver with the likes of a Mike Stern, or Wayne Krantz, I'd be interested.

Re: Big Weckl announcement?
I just wanna go ahead and agree with whoever said the music is cheesy. I so cannot listen to this stuff. I can get enough of Weckl through his video lessons (which are awesome) and short videos on youtube.
I've always hated those keyboard/synth sounds. They just sound plain wrong to me.
Dave has always been really good at marketing whatever he does however, in my opinion he lacks charisma when he "talks to you" though.
It would've been awesome if the news was he becoming the house drummer for The Voice or any other live music tv show. Anyway...

Re: Big Weckl announcement?
Though I don't really dig their earlier music and Dave's not my kind of drummer I will I will support this for it's educational value. That makes it worth it to me.
Probably not my taste artistically, but it will help make me a better drummer.
Now make Vinnie the guest drummer and I'll probably enjoy listening to the CD as well.
