I was wrong.. These guys did the documentary... They did a great job..

My pure distrust and vilification for Mike Johnston was misguided in this case..

Good on Mike.

If he has inspired just one person to play the drums and live a lifetime enjoying our instrument, my hat is off to him.
I'm sure there are several people here who would like to make the six figure income per year Mike makes through playing their instrument.

There is room for everyone guys.

Like any great personality, he is selling himself first!
He's very relatable...think of ALL the amazing drummers
out there and ALL the instructional videos...he cut
through and that says something.

He does bring drumming down to the average person
and that is where the greatest market is. He's a
good looking guy, in shape, the guy you could meet
at the market and talk to...open up to and share
a struggle with...and he would listen to you.

In the end, like any musician, it is the art of
connecting to your audience. He's got that Mike
Rowe thing going for him.

I have talked with Mike and he is a really nice guy. He is doing what he loves and is getting paid well. He is humble and works hard.

Well said Mark - I think he's inspired more than one. Having tasted the 'pro' life for a few years, I admire and envy anyone who can earn a living doing what they love.

I honestly don't know why he gets so much shit here. Like most drummers I learn or observe from, I take what I want and leave what I don't want <shrugs>. What's the big deal? It just always comes off as sour grapes when people just rip on what seems like a nice guy.

I liked a lot of his linear patterns and also bought his book, because I didn't know how to play that way, and some of the ideas were cool to me. Do I want to play like Mike Johnston? Absolutely not, I want to play like me.

I dont get it either. Mike has been the most humble guy, Ive never seen him bash any one. About his linear book, its really unique, and Ive learned a lot from it.

chris perra wrote:I like everything that was in that video.. aspiring to be a great teacher is great..

That said....the only thing Mike has done is raise the bar on marketing... those that have been on house of drumming for a long time know that..

I see that video. And if I had never heard of him or had been on HOD for his pathetic forum war to increase web traffic on his site and raise his profile.. I would say that guy is awesome

Sadly I think the video company that was so impressed with him and his story is his own. ... Looks very similar to everything he produces. .

I think it's great that someone has worked hard and built a living from teaching. ... I think it's lame that along the way he built his brand using smear and bashing tactics on YouTube and forums using the same wording as in the
first post.

His positive posting video on YouTube was great, once again if I never heard of him..I'd think he was great.. what an amazing message.. To bad it means nothing to people who have interacted with him on this forum or on YouTube pages ..

Typical bashing from someone trying to do the same thing MJ is doing.
