Hello folks.
Considering purchase of some vintage yammies. Can some of you experts educate me on the difference between the 9000 series and the Recording Custom series.
General questions I have are as follows:
When did the RC's come into production / when 9000 end?
General thoughts on differences/similarities in the characteristics of each?
TIA

Re: Yamaha Recording Custom / 9000 Questions
1978 (I think they started these in early 70s)

1983 (probably became Recording Custom in early 80s)

I have a 70s set of 9000 drums (small lugs), and I have a new set of Recording Customs (high tension lugs). They seem to have different edges and definitely sound different.
At some point, the 9000 line started using the high-tension lugs, and then they started calling them Recording Custom.

Re: Yamaha Recording Custom / 9000 Questions
Yamaha doesn't have much information on the early drums -I've asked. But the net has a lot of good info if you weed through it.
I do know the 9000 series was offered in Recording Standard and Custom. The Standard RC model was wrapped with natural BD hoops.
The only deviation from the standard RC formula I'm aware of, other than Anniversary drums, is that In late 82/83, the RC used shells that look thin compared to the later stuff, and the edges are fully rounded over and stained to match the interior. I also noticed these are somewhat coveted, and ebay sellers will often identify them as RA series, but it's actually a time period for these. The serial date is IJ ... KJ? I think .. not sure.

Thx for the info, guys.
Any information about the grey coating inside the shells? When did that start? Does it separate some RC's from others in particular way?
