Drummer having fun and grooving hard?

Check.

Bandmates appear happy with drums?

Check.

Anyone in the band struggling with what the drummer is doing?

Nope.

This wasn't some cover gig. It's original experimental music and I'm guessing they employed Guiliana because he's known for the unconventional. As a listener you have every right to be irritated by the performance, but the charge of being "anti-musical" is equivalent calling a theologian a heretic -- it's an absolute condemnation. Since I think this kind of music is defined by the guys who play it and how much they like what they're playing, I think your assessment is far too harsh. It's not what you would have played, but it's not your gig.

First part is indeed a 6/8 groove VERY African oriented, he plays the 1st and 3rd note of the triplet on the HH, Gary Novak plays that kind of groove on Corea's "Tumba Island", inspired by Salif Keita.

Of course Africans musicians own that kind of groove, as you guys are more aware of Corea's music than Africans artists, I droped Gary's name. ;-)

rodge, which part are you referring to? i think the discussion has revolved around the groove at 1:54 after the triplet feel section. but for that african type groove, sounds to me like he is playing the 1st and 2nd note of the triplet and leaving out the 3rd.

Thank goodness there are still gigs out there where you can experiment
without being held captive to 4/4...listen to the audience response...
they seem to dig it.

The lead singer on the other hand seems to be eating 18 donuts
as he utters some type of noise.

We often forget that the passion is as important as the musical
expression. Music is not just auditory. A drummer's (musicians)
passion/experience while playing is also caught by the listener,
especially in the small clubs.

I had a friend see Toss Panos and he commented more on the HOW
than the WHAT. He told me any time Toss plays live he wanted to go
and would gladly cover the tab it was so enjoyable. He created
a nick name for him--the rower--and still asks if the rower is playing
anywhere. He also bought anything Toss was on after that gig.
