? for Phil Maturano RE: Soca Punch

Postby Gaddabout » Fri May 06, 2011 6:57 pm

Hey Phil, on your video, on the bridge-like second chorus of Soca Punch, you play this really unusual baion-esque bass drum pattern and I didn't see it explaiend anywhere.

Is that just you being creative with the music, or is that actually a multi-bar ostinato found somewhere in the Latin-speaking world? (It grooved real hard with the bass, FWIW)

(And apologies if it's in there and I just spaced on the explanation)

Phil is so nasty..... One of my inspirations for sure, especially for the Latin flavor!

It's from IC Part 2. Took me awhile to find it online. It's this one ... starts about 1:25. But as I watch again, looks like you stick with the general theme throughout the song ...

Now that I think about it I must've downloaded this video from the site thinking it was lost video from Part 1 -- I own the book and CD. Explains why I couldn't find an explanation!

The soca rhythm I'm familiar with is sort of a half of a 3:2 clave, which may or may not be "authentic." Certainly don't make this claim. But I REALLY REALLY dig it when drummers mix world rhythms and especially make up their own new things over traditional ideas, which is I guess what caught my ear with this tune. ;)
