More with Max

This guy does more with a bass drum, snare and hat than most of the other so called teachers on the tube do with a full kit:

Cool lick, I do it very often, on the ride too.
I like his rimshot sound.

If you grew up listening to a lot of Stewart Copeland, this lick comes rather naturally. ;)

Great player, though. I like him a lot and his videos have made me consider buying his DVD.

I don't know why but I always had a weird time with this one. I couldn't get it to feel right. When Vinnie plays it he adds ghost notes to it in certain cases and that probably didn't help my trying to conceptualize it. I never thought about it being displaced triplets.

I'm thinking about getting his DVD myself.

Same lick, but starting on the "and" of the beat :

You're probably familiar with the build-up exercise --- quarters, quarter-note triplets, eighths, eighth-note triplets, sixteenths, etc.. There's a whole other world to that exercise where you displace those notes any variety. You do that a lot to a click, and playing it against 2&4 becomes second nature. I don't claim to be a metric modulation master, but I can attest it definitely works when you're wanting to play stuff like the lick above.

I don't know why Copeland's displaced rim in 'Walking on the Moon' didn't register as being the same thing. I'm thick sometimes. Again, Vinnie throwing that stuff around with ghost notes really threw me off.(Holdsworth's stuff comes to mind) Who knows, he may be playing some sort of septuplet or 32nd thing.

I just recently got David Stanoch's book that deals with the type of stuff you're talking about concerning the displaced rhythmic scale. Good stuff I plan on working on.
