any alternatives to p85 strainers?

bought an old 70's blue / olive ludwig acrolite and noticed the strainer constantly getting loose during gigs. wondering if there are other reasonable alternatives to a p85 strainer as i am leery of them due to past experiences w/ them.

I changed my mid-60s Supra 400 to this strainer, holes match-up and no more loosening...

Yeah I've always heard everyone on here swear by the p86's, especially for BB's...

The timing of your post is scary as I was just researching this yesterday. I have a Supra that does the same thing. I hate the P-85 throw!

As others have said the P-86 seems to be a direct replacement.

Someone also makes a retro fit kit for the trick throw. You can see it here.

However, if you thought the P-86 was overkill this option will probably not be suitable.

Bob Gatzen has a snare quick-tip video where he uses an Evans min-EMAD to prevent the tension knob from rotating here:

Otherwise, you could measure the hole spacing and try to buy a replacement. Perhaps a Gibraltar. Some modification may be necessary.

Four Possibilities went to me when I was looking to replace the P-85 on my Acrolite.

1- Ludwig P-86
2- Dunnett R4-L throw-off
3- Trick with custom adapter bracket
4- Drill holes and fit anykind of strainer



For economical and quick availability reason I went with what was the easiest to me which was the Ludwig P-86. I still have no regrets.

that is awesome! Me thinks that I will go w/ the emad. I'm a lil' tight on budget and THAT will do the trick! plus i get to still retain the "retro" look of the snare as a whole. oh the wonders of the internet. just when you think there is only ONE solution the community chimes back in w/ even a better one.
