Buddy had a extremely long career. Both of you may be right. I'm sure he used plenty of sticks through the years including some from Fred's/Sammy's drum shop that went out of business 40 years ago.

Buddy gave me a pair of his sticks after a set he played in mid-late 60s.

They were very small, think 7A, with skinny neck, small bead, thin shank, the kind of stick
you would be afraid to play since it had so little mass and broke so very easily.
The pr he gave me split right at the neck....go figure !

Buddy, like Dennis C, was able to get all the volume he wanted from a small stick.

Off the subject of Buddy's stick and focusing on his L hand grip:

I've always been vexed how Buddy could play what he did by holding his
L stick in his fulcrum so close to the middle of the stick.....ya know what I mean?

I mean the opposite of early Weckl and current Carlock.

Buddy had to work the stick so much more by holding it so close the the middle
and this sacrificed the power and height and arc his stick made by doing so.

But, he made it work for him.
