The fat back exercises are basically just your standard accebnt sheet like the first page of the Unreel book or what Benny greb starts his DVD with. I' ve just memorized those those and have a system for going through ostinatos with it as a daily routine. I add some reading pages, too. I like to use books as inspiration for my own routine. I don't really work on one and one book. It's alll the same anyway and if you read enough of them you start making your own way of doing things for your own needs. If you take these things all the way, I personally feel the technique patterns book doesn't really offer anything new.
Now with the linear and sticking material there are endless uses and I prefer to spend a long time with with each pattern and really internalize it. Us it for all sorts of things, through them in to grooves, breaks and solos. Both strickt practicing and jamming. When you got a few down the next ones will be easier, but then you can start combining all sorts of concepts with eachother. Just be creative, have fun and take your time and really make some personal music with it.
