Awesome. When you have time could you give us a review of how each kit compares to the other? You have everything but beech and oak so I'd like to hear what differences you (and microphones) hear when playing them.

Thanks guys for all the kind words....
I grew up as most of us did listening to these kits being played buy Weckl, Gadd, Colaiuta and many others and have been meaning to get one for years.
YAMAHA have asked me to do a comparison on the kits as well so it was on the cards a while ago but even more so now. Lucky for me they are all pretty much the same size except for a couple of depths on the Maple Custom it's should be a fairly accurate comparison.
Maple Custom: 8x8, 10x8, 12x8, 14x12, 16x14, 22x16.
PHX: 8x7, 10x7.5, 12x8, 14x13, 16x15, 22x18.
Birch Custom Absolute: 10x7.5, 12x8, 14x14, 16x15, 22x18.
Recording Custom: 10x7.5, 12x8, 14x14, 16x16, 22x18.
This will be a massive undertaking but it would be well worth it, all audio will be on PROTOOLS and the EQ will be flat.
I think hydration and snacks will be needed.........

Ronn Dunnet is about to release a new attachement as well, along with the eKey, looks pretty good I must say.

I am gearing up for the comparrison to be released in January 2013, there is a lot of work involved but I am keen to see the outcome myself, I will be using the 10" toms as a break down on interior/exterior finish, lug designs and tunability.... here are the toms stacked for the "breakdown" section.

So I used the RC the first couple of gigs when I first picked it up, put some Remo clear Emps on it and tuned it up.... this kit just sings. It was my childhood dream kit and after all these years I was sitting behind my own Recording Custom. The band loved it, the sound guy couldn't praise the tone of the 10" and 14" toms enough and even he wanted to know the difference between my regular birch custom absolute and the RC, was an interesting conversation.
Steve, I have a lot of Yamaha gear, it's my sound. The feel and the tone of their drums is whats it's all about for me, anything you want to see in the clip please let me know.
PS: PHX sounds killer in your lesson videos.

I did read your PM Richie. I'll write up my comparison wish list and post it in here when I'm done.

Hah. Well- to me, the "ultimate" drum sound (as silly as it is to make something the 'best', so to speak) is Gretsch. It's a classic sound that works for so many things. I think a lot of us can agree with that, or at least that the Recording Custom sound is just as classic.
Take either of those drums and crank them up to 11. That's what you get with the PHX stuff. And after playing Steve's kit and listening to him play them, I can tell you that they don't sound that different from the recording. It's amazing what Yamaha has done.
That being said- I'll probably get a set of USA customs before a PHX. A PHX kit is like the finest grand piano- I'd want to leave it in one place and never gig out with it.
Then again, I'd feel the same way about a yellow Tony kit...

I was at this drum festival 2 years ago and one of the drummers playing was Gavin. To me, Gavin has a mind-blowing beautiful sound. But, for me the 'best/biggest' sound that day was when a [local] drummer, Ton Dijkman, played on his PHX. [5b sticks]. Same sound tech, same PA system...a bunch of fantastic drummers. The PHX had the biggest 'boom' combined with great centered tone. Awesome drums. Hands down the phattest sound....even compared to Gavin's amazing Sonor set.
