I just read in MD that he won the John T and Catherine D Macarthur foundation genius grant ($500,000)! He said it should finance a book and a few albums. Wow!

Dafnis' playing is fine, and all, but man, gotta give big props to the guy rapping. His time and phrasing was outstanding.

Re: The Prieto Madness - AMAZING
He's sick, there was a part in that first vid where he superimposed a 6/8 feel clave over the clave in a 3 over 4 relation...
I think people don't dig him, because he doesn't give them the instant satisfaction people seek.
He doesn't play a huge setup like el negro, so you have to real listen into what he is doing, because there isn't so many unique sounds sticking out. On top of that his chops stuff isn't packaged like Weckl's or Vinnie's. It has more of an underlying thing that it relates to rather than being a huge fill for huge fill's sake.

He may not have that many people who dig him, but some people dig him enough to give him a half a mil. Quality over quantity digs.DeeP_FRieD wrote:He's sick, there was a part in that first vid where he superimposed a 6/8 feel clave over the clave in a 3 over 4 relation...

I'd rather hear this guy with Pat Metheny than Sanchez...

There's something about Antonio Sanchez's playing that really ruins the music for me...and that's saying quite a bit given Metheny's epic compositional style. His presence in the music is almost menacing...at least, to me...

I completely agree...menacing is a good word. He never makes drums sound like drums to me...
