Skill level, sure. I hope to get there some day.
As far as sounding like Vinnie....... What's the point? Vinnie is just expressing himself, which is the main point anyway, and we're all different.

"CAN ANYONE LEARN THAT", you say ????
You must be joking. The list you made about practicing 24/7, Berklee,
Zappa, yrs of playing experience. WRONG !!
He didn't learn to think like that from those experiences, because his phrasing is unique to him, as your phrasing is unique to you.
Practicing, studying, listening are only TOOLS he uses to phrase and play his ideas.
No one, you nor I can play like him...we can try to play his ideas, but they will always sound like his ideas being played by someone else.
That's why 'there is only ONE Vinnie.'
I'd have to disagree there. Not to ever take anything away from Vince.
But... if you listen to a lot of Tony, and listen to a lot of Vinnie. Vince very obviously is using (and got) a ton of stuff from Tony. From the phrasings to the licks, he puts his own twist on them for sure. But you can bet a whole boat load of whatever you want that the blushda's, flamtastic fills, etc came from long before vinnie ever touched his sticks. The blushda alone? Awesome lick and vince is creative with it, but it ain't his lick at all.
He plays a lot more, and takes things to a new level - but that's what progression is. However, when you say "his ideas..." keep in mind, he just studied Tony (self admittedly) and cop'd a ton his licks. Note for note even. And readily admits it as well.
Chaffee? Heck anyone who's done a serious study of his books has found themselves remarkably playing "vinnie licks" - well they aren't vinnie licks, they are chaffee's licks and phrasing concepts. Vince has popularized them fo rsure, but again a very clear case that there is a very traceable source to the "uniqueness".
Vinnie spent who knows how much time studying with Chaffee - and Chaffee LOVED all those weird phrasings, artificial note groupings, stretching and manipulating time, etc...
I guess point being that there is a very short and traceable line from where vinnie got his "style" from, and an extremely obvious source for a lot of the licks and phrasing concepts. His execution is phenomenal, and most likely few will ever become that popular with that playing style ever.
Again not to take anything from Vinnie at all, but lets call a spade a spade and give credit to where credit is due. The man is a master of the instrument no doubt, a creative voice and bushes the boundaries, but he has his sources for sure....
When I hear consecutive flams being used - I don't think, oh they are copping vinice!, I think oh they are copping Tony.
Get's into what I think we are starting to see as a whole with drumming, being it's so new, there is a limited vocabulary on the instrument, with some phrases being super prominent (like flams), 2+ 4, etc. It starts to become the mico differences in the "touch" and "feel" of the notes more so then what notes are actually being played.
IE: That's why studied players can often call out (with great accuracy) the influences of others.

One of my most favourite songs ever. Long before I even thought about picking up the drums. My favourite guitarplayer, drummer and singer/songwriter on the same stage. Larry ain't half bad either.
Re: Vinnie Live 2010

I'm pretty sure they're all from that DVD. I'll have to check when I get home next week.
