Concerning the BRMSC:
IMO Vinnie played stuff that was so alien and ass-kicking, we all wondered where the chops, and later on as we matured, just where the CONCEPTS came from.
Also, I've always thought it would be wonderful to have a re-mastered version of the trio duel so that we could hear Weckl. Someday..He played some great stuff; If only we could HEAR IT!
As far as Gadd goes: he was so FAT and TASTY in every lick he played. He played with such confidence with a groove and sound all his own. He was like the Godfather up there.
Wonderful stuff, and by far, the most played Vhs in my library over the years besides a Who/Tommy concert with Simon Phillips. (NO, Simon is no Keith, but he's all Simon, and that vid was amazing in the fact that 90% of Simons fills were caught on tape. Lovely..)

Re: Gadd
Man the three of those guys performing together at the BRMC will forever be burned into my mind. Killing all the way around. PERIOD. It must have been so cool for Dave and Vinnie to be playing with a hero of both of theirs.
Now to say they 'decimated' Steve or however it was put is just, no offense, ignorant. A lot of younger guys these days don't GET Steve. I know I didn't before and admittedly when I first watched this VHS I thought the same thing. 'Vinnie smoked them both!' But to make something FEEL the way Steve does is a lot harder than it seems. Especially if you are just looking for flashy chops. Now that is NOT to say Steve doesn't have chops! Start digging and you will find.
I mean check out that powerhouse flam stuff at about 3:45. That is just balls out drumming. A MASSIVE statement with very few notes. I have most of this clip memorized now (NOT that I can play it!) and honestly this is the part I think of when I pull up this mental file these days.
Not sure how Danny Carey was brought into this. Either way, to try and compare or even mention him, in a thread titled 'GADD', just reeks of competitive BS. Another thing that doesn't really play a role in my musical listening or playing anymore. I call irrelevant. Maybe I need to go back and read a little closer. Regardless, Danny is great at doing his thing, it is just a very different thing.

Re: Gadd
Gadd was doing himself witch is good, Dave was not hitting hard enough (I mean he doesn't have that Rock background that Steve and Vinnie have), and Vinnie was the futur, that's why a lot of people did not get it, to me he is still the futur anyway.
I'm glad I've been able to take/understand Vinnie's earlier musical statement way before he to becomed an icon.
Respect to Steve Gadd anyway.

Re: Gadd
I never get tired of watching that video.
My vote would be for it to be included in any time capsule sent into space or buried here on Earth that shows the best of what human music is/was about.
Of course, nobody’s asking me about such things.
To compare these guys to each other is fruitless.
It’s like arguing over super heroes. Who’s “best”?
Batman, Superman, The Hulk?

All I know is, they’re ALL kicking my butt.

Re: Gadd
Gadd was the most controlled out of the three of them, just noticed that there were a few mishits from Vinnie and Dave.
Re: Gadd
I really don't know where you heard that "mishits" from D and V, but still, like said Miles (?), people who don't take any risks don't do mistakes, personnaly I want to hear people taking risk.

Me too. There has to be that "mystery".
Although music isn't "competitive" like auto racing, the following video clip is appropriate (from the new documentary "Senna", which is great):
Re: Gadd
They clipped a few cymbals when going towards the toms.
Gadd always, to me, has this controlled power and precision combined with feel. Personally, I prefer that to going for "it" and a bit of sloppiness.
In fact, Dave has that power now...it is about control over your brain and the instrument. That's more than enough mystery for me. In fact, the mystery comes from the masters, and Vinnie, of course has it.
Like Senna at Donington...like Schumacher numerous times. Like Ari Vatanen going up Pike's Peak.
I like and admire it because I can't do it.

Re: Gadd
really love reading about every ones thoughts on the buddy night. the one thing i took from that one magical night was the phrasings. the chops and execution was stellar with the band and the trading. the stuff that stays with you for years is the phrases they played. gadd's phrases with out a doubt were the most moving. once gadd played his little intro he breaks into his signature groove thing. dave goes first and plays a great phrase then vinnie comes out and plays something you have never heard of or ever seen. then you have steve come out and play this hi hat to snare then bass drum to floor tom phrase and it sets the tone and the most ultimate drumming phrase you have ever heard. it was a very musical response that first phrase he played. those three cats on stage have very different personalities. whats amazing about those three guys during this time is that they were all pretty much on the top of their game. it's a shame more moments like that didn't reach a video recorder. props to vinnie on being vinnie that night. my god. the first time i saw that buddy night I couldn't believe my ears never alone my eyes. to see it pulled off is a god send.

That's interesting. I *LOVED* Weckl's performance with the band. Probably my favorite out of any of those of any BRMC events.
But the solos ... Gadd and Vinnie had phrases that made sense to me. Weckl's seemed kind of random and didn't always resolve in a way that appealed to me. What was funny is it seemed like Vinnie was hearing what Weckl was doing and then putting his own spin on it. LOL
“Let's try some of my songs.” Dave Grohl, top sign drummer will be fired.
