yeah, I'd say based on the show so far, there's definite bias towards Mike. I'm sure episode 3 will be a game changer.

Had no idea Derek Roddy was such a BA.

Are these guys always so serious?

Interesting that in one part, the keyboard player admits to writing it complicated on purpose = musical fail imo. But, that's their bag and I get it.

i don't listen to them anymore, since i've past that stage long ago, but they aren't shitty. perhaps their later stuff is, but their first couple albums are quite good and ground-breaking for what they are. it's like calling RUSH shitty. that's just not fair.

Let me guess, Travis Barker is your favorite drummer?

True, but he also said the point was to have something complicated to see how fast/well they would be able to play with it on the fly; in which case that's a perfectly valid reason for intentionally writing something in any given way. It's a smart move as far as testing a musician.

Uber cool concept! I really dug watching these. Not a DT fan, but I can’t wait to see the third episode.

Honestly, I’d say any of these guys could handle the slot.
But as was made so clear, a big part of what they’re looking for is in the guy that will play the songs as is, not really interjecting much of themselves into them.

I’m slightly surprised not to see Rod Morgenstein in the running. He played with Jordan Rudess for a good while. It would be cool to see him in there for an audition at least. He could certainly handle it.

Mangini really is being portrayed as the fav. He did nail it though. What we were able to see at least.

Derek Roddy wasn’t shown in a very flattering light. I wonder how much of that had to do with the editing.

Lang is great. But always in a cold, surgical kind of way. Not a “metal” bone in his body. Not the guy for this.

I agree that Virgil would be overkill. Like installing a V8 in a go-kart. I felt bad watching him depart. He so deserves a great gig of some kind.

I liked Marco best. He sounded great with them I thought.

The show really makes it apparent just how much of a hole was left for these guys when Portnoy jumped ship.

They’re really making lemonade out of those lemons with this series though. They’ll gain oodles of fans just from it alone I’d bet.

One thing I thought of while watching… imagine Peart walking away from Rush at some point during their earlier career? Maybe after Grace Under Pressure or somewhere there abouts, and a similar show being made? Who would those contestants have been?

It was an exercise -- a test of aptitude -- and nothing more. He wasn't saying "This is going to be on our next album." I thought it was pretty clever way to see how fast these guys compile complicated information and was somewhat surprised how challenging it was for some of them. Made them look more human.

Part of wishes he HAD walked away after Grace Under Pressure, but I'm an old fart and don't always welcome change in my musical acts. IMO he stopped evolving at that point and just leveled off.

But if we're looking for a real comparison, it would be like Peart asking for a Hiatus after Test for Echo, and that's exactly what they band did! They took 5 years off to go learn new things. Geddy actually took bass lessons to learn how to read music. Peart, as we all know, had his grip adjusted by Freddie Gruber and tried to learn how to swing. I don't really care for what they've done since then, but it's hard to argue with their popularity and the new sound seems to have attracted new fans.

Funny! Not quite. My favorite drummers right now are Ari Hoenig and Brian Blade, and my favorite non-instrumental band is Steely Dan. I never listen to Dream Theater anymore. Is that enough taste and musical maturity to justify my musical judgment for you? I can't believe I even had to say that. You're way off the mark, and judging by your vast generalizations and superficial critique, your musical horizons and capabilities are probably quite limited in their own way. All I was saying is that they are not objectively "shitty."

Gavin is someone I would like to hear with that band... Mangini is great, but that´s not enough to make my buy a DT album (I already own 2!).
