The infamous Polnareff tour dvd solo by Virgil

Postby Morgenthaler » Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:57 pm

If this work, this is the infamous Polnareff Tour-DVD solo by Virgil.
The tour was sold out, ending with a performance in front of 600,000 people
at The Eiffel Tower in Paris.

You know, I've always wondered why Virgil doesn't play two kicks... I mean, sure, he's allowed to prefer the feel of the double pedal, but still, you'd think that with his technique he'd really be able to utilize the two kick drums more than others. Maybe when he lands the Dream Theater gig? haha

He has actually been playing two bass drums now and then throughout his career.
He just grew fond of the single bass drum setup over time and
along with the drastic improvements in the action and quality in double pedals over the years,
this is an easier setup.

This is a clip from his 'Obsessive Rhythms' tape from 1989

And this shot is from his days with Premier (Signia Marquis)

Ugh.... that last shot is from the Freakhouse days, or whatever that band was. I don't think he actually had the second kick connected to a pedal. I seem to remember him saying around the Vai gig time that he still used the double pedal and the second kick was for looks only.

Yup, as the pictures says, that was from the Freakhouse days.
He soon thereafter shifted from using both bass drums to having two, and playing just one
of them. Vai liked the look of two and asked him to have two in his setup.

I like Vai really... But it's sooooo cheesy to have a drum just for looks. And I am not sure what Virgil was thinking with Freakhouse at all. Those guys were awful. I also don't see what the whole Boals thing was either, and as bad as his power metal thing was, I think that new band Virg is in is even worse... It's like a midlife crisis in a way. You know I love Virg, I grew up with his playing, I studied with him, but that new shit is just awful. I really dig the VD band stuff as well as Soul Sirkus. That was some cool music!!! And Polareff? Goofy, man... but I suppose that's what payed the bills. :)

It could be worse, I recall a picture of Mike Terrana wearing a second bass drum at a recording session just for looks or mounting purposes.

@Steve point taken ;)

although an entire forum packed with topics on Virg would be cool. Oh, that's right, I already have that on another forum :)
