not much Vinnie screen time, but there are hints of some lovely stuff in the studio jams and in the background music: I remember thinking when this went out on the South Bank Show in '96 that there must have been hours of film not used in the final cut, and surely someone has some of it somewhere? I also thought that about the Ten Summoner's Tales video...

In my humble opinion, this was Sting's best album - with hindsight it's probably because so many of the songs/lyrics resonated with me at a particularly personally painful time in my life: The Hounds of Winter is one of my all-time favourites still. :(

Vinnie was actually still a somewhat 'recovering' Vinnie, as he had just returned from missing two gigs due to some severe flu-like symptoms. From the stellar performance, one would never know it though.
The official tour for Ten Summoners Tales had ended in March of 94. Sting then released the Fields Of Gold : Best of Sting around September of 94 and the band reconvened for live shows and various TV performances to promote that collection...which explains the presence of When We Dance (the new single from the collection) and Take Me To The Sunshine (performed in Japan due to the inclusion of the song as a special feature bonus track on the Japanese version - and also the use of the song in a TV advertisement for a golf course in Japan).
While Colaiuta was ill, a South African drummer named Ian Herman filled in for a gig in Johannesburg and Manu Katche' handled the drumming at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

and purely by chance, I came across this recording of Vinnie's dep on that very gig:

interesting?

It only took 1:15 or so to tell that this was virtually anyone else! It's really tremendous the voice that Vinnie has on Sting's gig. I would never want to be the guy replacing him!

Yea, it drags and wavers on the opening tune. Clunky, less syncopated bass drum.
