IS THE V.C. GOLDEN AGE OVER ?

.....I've considered bringing up this topic for a while, but
ultimatley declined as it might sound too negative or even
prophetic.
.....Like many of you, I've been following VC for many years. 1980
for me. From 1978 through today we have seen progressively less "mind blowing
records" featuring Vinnie....... Reasons? Fusion doesn't sell / Vinnie
has become very selective what recording offers he accepts / he
doesn't need $ now / age / spend time with new wife / podcast
is newest hobby / jazz doesn't sell ?
.....I don't think we will see the likes of BIG DRUM anymore. Or
SECRETS or KARIZMA or PATITUCCI FUSION TOUR or ALAN PASQUA
LIVE GIGS or DOG CHEESE or RANDY WALDMAN 'WIGGED OUT' music
or AUDIO MIND or DEWA BUDJANA or BAKED POTATO BLOW OUTS or
CHICK COREA DATES
(like 1992-93 Special New Years Eve Quintet).
.....The Non-Commercial, Jazz & Improvised sessions, recordings
and boots are becoming less and less.
..... I know the same thing happened with The Steve Gadd we all
know and loved when he came on the scene after leaving TUSAB
and moved to NYC and started recording.
.....God bless Weckl as he still puts out solo CDs (even though he
loses $ each time) and tours with great players playing good non-commercial
music.
.....Soooo, do you think we will ever see a new BIG DRUM kind of release
ever again ?

I prefer to take a more positive approach. We're privileged to have followed (and continue to follow) one of the greatest drummers of all time - in the present. Not something we look back on in the past (like Buddy or something).
And because the music business will never be the same in terms of the demand for recorded music and live shows - it's likely this last generation of AAA drummers will be the last to have those strengths (multiple styles, multiple recordings, tours, etc). Future drummers will too obviously, but not in the same way. It's like being a master at making a calculator, or a horse-and-buggy repair person. The demand for your skill is simply less. Music will never go away, and there will be folks who have passion for and study drumming, but they won't have the industry to THRIVE IN.
Some folks don't like the phrase "It is what it is" because it doesn't have any comparisons. But i like it because it acknowledges all sides. Strengths AND weakness. I'm all about that these days. Seeing all sides within the correct context.
We still have all those recordings to enjoy - and more videos than we'd ever expect with ease of access. That's great. The House of Drumming community especially knows how lucky we are to have things like youtube now because we all craved footage of our favorites in a time where it was scarce.

Many things are different.

If I hadn't experienced what I have I certainly would have tried to pick up that torch, but if you look around there drummers are out there, they're just less exposed.

Obviously and indisputable the money isn't really there anymore, that we've known for a long time, but then again, the price of recording, if you can do more yourself, has been significantly reduced.

It's still about personal taste and though most of us are, not everyone is a Vinnie fan. We all like and do music in our own way. That said, people who say that they don't like that stuff often have their minds blown either by exposure to that music or when shown that jazzy approach with a bit more oomph.

You are free to contribute yourself, I certainly will if I can get m skills back and I'm able to finance such things. That was what most of my teacher's salary and publication income was supposed to go to. Hiring the right people and do the gig even if we made no money and I had to pay for it all out of my own pocket. That was the whole plan. Still moving towards that, but there's been such a huge setback and I'm still moving at a very reduced pace atm.

As Steve says, the need for that specialist is much reduced, but if motivated people can and do still make this stuff. I personally much prefer a live recording myself which if someone does a tour and pay to record the last handful of shows certainly can be made.

It's like these big band gigs I see happen with local professionals once a year. Hardly anyone can really finance a big band full time, it was always had btw, but people can get together and do this for the love of it once in a while. If you plan it well, the musos will come and if you plan it even a bit better, you will at least not loose money.

Things move in waves and like live music eventually came back, so will also certain approaches to music.

Just like we have blues and country clubs, we also, even in little Norway, have clubs and festivals that could defend this being your main thing for the summer and a short club tour out of season.

 Yeah it's so obviously Gadd, he was probably asked to do that or was just in a, "what would Gadd do here?" moment that day.
Moderation's all well and good, just don't overdo it.

If I remember correctly (and it's possible I'm wrong.) That is not Vinnie.

Vinnie was on the Timezone record (which is AMAZING!!!!!!) and (I think?) this is from Jackmagnet with David Logeman. I asked Vinnie about Timezone once, he said "Yeah we recorded that in Jakob's living room, we were just blowing and going for it." Timezone was Vinnie, Landau, Tav, Jeff Berlin, and Jakob.

It doesn't even really sound like Vinnie (to me.)
Sounds like sort of a carbon copy of Vinnie or Gadd.

Excuse me if my memory (or taste) is failing me,
