This clip does have the vibe of a band just trying to get through the night (the tenor player is already sitting down by the 4min mark of the gig), bit the audience also seems very sedate. Just a low-energy vibe all around...

What I am hearing from Carlock is a top-heavy sound, driving the time with the chomping hihat instead of a kick/snare groove. I hear a lot of guys doing this in NYC clubs, partly stylistic and also environmental (tiny clubs, tiny bass drums, no amplification for the rest of the band). Not that there aren't small clubs everywhere, but New York is where there is enough critical mass of people playing this music and pushing it forward that it can be appreciated as a style (IMO).

Having said that, not EVERYONE in NYC plays like that. :) Here's Kim Thompson with Stern at the 55 Bar (a must-visit! I saw Pelton there once, he had more tambourines than cymbals on his kit), delivering a little energy:

She's pretty wonderful.

That vid was not that exciting but reminded me to a recent Facebook post from Gary H:

"Billy Cobham Spectrum 40 tonight at Cork Jazz Festival. We're running on one and a quarter hours sleep last night, and travel chaos all day but it'll be good to play."

I love Carlock anyways... :D

This is what happens when a sound guy gets someone that plays an openly tuned kick. It happens to me all the time at gigs with sound guys.

"Doubles on toms"....that's how Weck makes his living!....Doubles on everything. I think keiths drums sound the best I've ever heard them here. Same playing/phrasing, however...
