What's Dennis actually playing here?

Postby GoAndPractice » Tue Feb 21, 2012 11:21 pm

He always seems to throw this into the peak of his solos, where he's going crazy on the snare cymbals. You probably know what I'm talking about without watching the videos.

It definitely seems to be more than just singles, sometimes he has busier bass drum hits. I even remember a Drum Channel thing where Bozzio brought it up in an interview and Dennis didn't really give an answer...

Anyone able to figure out any of it or find any patterns? Looks like some kind of paradiddle thing but I can't say for sure...

Tell us what time in the clips to be watching for. Somewhere I have a book transcribing some of the Serious Moves solos. Don't recall if The Nag is one of them though.

I think what your talking about is when he is soloing over the LRR (with his feet), is that right? A time reference in the videos would be useful for us to understand you better. I remember this being explained in an instructional DVD, maybe by Steve Smith in his History of the US Beat?

Guys, all the time references are written on the right side of the videos.

What he said...

Not the LRR LRR thing, which is cool too, but the part where's he's just going wild while (seemingly) out-of-time

If I have the timing correct. It just seems like triplets, accenting the 1st beat with a bass drum and crash..albeit at a redonkulous rate of speed.
