Official Virgil Donati thread

Postby Morgenthaler » Fri May 04, 2012 5:25 am

I thought I'd put together a thread of some of the better videos (either quality wise or playing wise) of Virgil's playing over the years.
There's way too many crappy smartphone clips floating around, so I'll be adding stuff to this thread
along the way, as should you if you feel like it. I'll start it off with a very recent set of clips from a
clinic in Atlanta. Blinding chops among those clips.

This exercise is just to keep this stuff in one place.

Thanks Morgenthaler, I'll look these up. Virgil is an inspiring drummer.

Not my favorite drummer, but there's no denying his abilities on the kit.

20 minute montage from a gig with Holdsworth/Haslip/Donati at Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany.
Some potent fills in the Proto Cosmos vamp ;)

Seems like he's been really developing a more dynamic touch overall- his feel seems to be much more laid back nowadays.

Some Holdsworth/Donati/Haslip madness.

It reminded me a bit of the bootlegs from ca 1997 of Virg with OTV/Gnomes Of Zürich and
also with Tribal Tech. Those shows had such intense playing that it left me
breathless: http://soundcloud.com/morgenthaler/tt-virg

Man, the TT gigs are just insane. I used to have that one, The Big Wave and Actual Proof. Must be somewhere in an old HD backup.

I respect him, Steve Smith too, for their dedication to the instrument, what amont of work for playing all those crazy things !!! :o
I respect that, really.

But I don't hear any music in his drumming, same for SS, saying this I have to give more credit to people like Dave, Gary, etc... Because they are truly some beautuiful musicians, and being a consumate musician is way harder than being an INCREDIBLE drummer.
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Loving the clips with Holdsworth.

Vigils got lots of ideas and chops. I guess for some the chops get in the way of him making a musical statement. I do like the way Allen lets his drummers play whatever they like. Free for all approach. Vigil fits well with Holdsworth's music.
