But wouldnt you think that ANY manufacturer asking good money for their stuff would strive to make something at least acceptable by the industry standard? This line of thinking makes me think that its not the instrument, but the actual tuning customs of a musician. They say that a good artist can mke even a crappy kit sound awesome. So why do people complain about the sound of top of the range DWs and Pearls? Its just a mystery to me

I don't know that they do.
I know that people (I talk to) complain about DW.

As I used to sell drums for a living I have heard a ton of drum sets.
There were no general complaints about Pearl quality/sound/tuning problems, whereas people often came back and complained
about how hard it was to tune DWs. Not all, but many, and far more so than with any other major brand.

But that's another discussion. I like the ITL sound for Virg. You don't. :)

Pft. Drums sound the way you want them to sound. If you can play (and Virgil can play as well as anyone) the drums will sound good or at least sound the way the drummer wants them to sound from behind the kit. Now, once you add mics and other people ... that's when things can go haywire.

True dat. This fact was made painfully clear to me recently

It's also that reason why you can say that Pearl and DW really suck, because even with mics, the sound still sucks... :-(
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

I could start linking to Jeff live, Ferrone with Clapton live, Hakim live, Chambers live and it would still come down to personal taste.
This is getting a little bit stupid.

Yeah true about Jeff and Omar, I'm maybe a lil' harsh with Pearl.

But you know what, remember Virgil's first video, I liked the sound of his Remo !!! :o
I never liked the sound of his Pearl or Premier.

But maybe, like Dennis, he hits way too hard for having a better sound ?

As I said - it is down to personal taste.

Rodge you hit it on the nose. He does hit really hard. Heavy sticks also. Think he plays a 2B. The dude is strong. He has lots of attack. I'm sure the drums sound good. It's his touch. Put Weckl behind his kit and you will hear tone.
