This might be as close as Steve gets to playing in Journey again. Drums sound
very much what you would think when recorded w/a video recorder. Smith
playing 70-80's rock again in his new era.

Also realize that since they're in a hotel ballroom, Steve's probably holding back a bit, and not playing full volume.

Wonder if he'll bust out some Konikol........ ;)

The performance was at a ballroom, the video was at studio.

New Steve w/his old pal Neal Schon "The Calling" instrumental (free download)
http://www.schonmusic.com

Sounds solid here in a rock format...none of the fills on that rehearsal here.
His well constructed parts ala Journey on this one.

That´s what I miss from Steve.

You really want SS to go back to that Power Dot/snare-tuned-in-low-tom-range sound?

I'm hearing musical rock ballad playing, which is a big (and underappreciated) aspect to Journey's radio success. Also, they're in a tiny room.

I don´t want Steve plays how/what he doesn´t want to play.
I just miss that Journey/pocket/rock feel on this "recent" Rock-Steve Smith.
Feel that I think that the other members of the band give to the tune.
This is very personal, an opinion.

I had the same thoughts when he came to my town with Bill Evans Band.
I just didn´t feel right a symple 16 beat on HH, with 2-4 on snare and a BD here and there.

Of course, I liked more the live version of the tune that the rehearsal one.

Steve was the king of the big ballad. The feel he played with on "Open Arms" was amazing. To play that slow and put every note in just the right place was (I think) a hallmark of his playing back then.

But this is now, and he's grown musically so I wouldn't expect him to play the same as he did in the 1970's.

Haha can there be only one king?

I think it's interesting to see how people are not happy with the way a given accomplished player(s) has evolved.

I'm interrupting the flow of Steve Smith discourse in favor of some Pierre Van Der Linden!!! So smooth!!!
